So I happened to be bowling with a teammate and the pro shop guy stopped by as he knew my friend. Out the blue he looked at the balls I had out on the rack and he mentioned all my gear was drilled for maximum hook and I had a number of over laps in my balls. My long winded question is, does it make sense to to plug and redrill or just try and add polish to create some differences in reaction?
Sorry I don't have specs, but I am throwing:
Marvel S
Disturbed
Pro tactics
2 furious
Frantic
First three I stand 35 and throw out to 8
Last two I stand 27 and throw out to 10
I would rather be standing more in the center of the approach, so I have room to move left as the lanes break down.
-
if your happy with the reactions now, I wouldn't worry about it.
If not adjust surfaces to try for a little different look, before plugging.
-
I really wanted the Disturbed to be my benchmark ball, and standing so far left isn't really what I wanted.
-
Take Disturbed to 4000 and try that. Step it up.
-
Surface dictates approx 70-75% of reaction..if you want to create more gaps, change the surfaces
-
Yep stopping by the pro shop to have that done, then going to need to look at other balls, and see what if any other changes I need to make.
-
It sounds like you have too many drivers in your bag...what do you do when you run across varying reactions? You gotta create options with your tools or pieces...
-
Made the mistake of not learning more before buying and now I'm trying to increase my knowledge, before making the same mistakes.
Moving forward hoping to avoid this issue.
Thanks for the info

Look at the cover as the tires and the core as the engine...
-
avoid redrill if possible
as stated above, change surfaces 1st
2nd option, if possible add weight hole to change reaction
i have learned alot about surfaces and layouts the past few years
i try to play much straighter up front and more arcing in the back of the lane
for me...i pick mostly symmetric cores and drill longer pin-pap
my favorite layout in the pin in my middle finger which is a 5" pin
i rarely stand in that far unless its the long pattern or the heads are gone

Sounds like you don't have a huge amount of oil to begin with and you really don't have anything that isn't either strong covered or atleast, in theory, laid out strong. Different surfaces with the different covers will yield different reactions.
The disturbed is a strong ball so I would save it for when you encounter oil. It would be a great benchmark if you hand the head oil to get it to the mids.

I see this a lot, and only on this site. How do you stand 35 and throw out to 8? If Im standing 35, I'm at LEAST at 20 at the arrows. I don't get how some of you people are standing so far away from your targets.

Impossible angles to repeat successfully shot after shot. Close up the angles and get the ball down lane.

Therein lies the problem, their swings probably bump out so far right that they get the ball to the right too quick and it duck hooks through the face. So they keep moving and moving so they can "elbow" the ball to right, using the puddle in the middle to guide it there. I saw that a lot this summer, I can't tell you how many times I heard "these lanes are dry", "why are you wiping the oil off your ball, there isn't any oil out there", "this is my last time bowling here, its too dry". 95% of the time, its people pitching the ball right so damn early it either goes face or burns up and stops which makes them go grab their 1000 grit solid ball. I could never be a proprietor, you could never pay me enough to deal with bowlers on a regular basis.
Sorry, I had to rant.

This is why I am asking the question, so I can be more informed and know the right questions to ask my driller. When I got back in to bowling, he watched how I threw the ball and determined I didn't have a lot of hand so he was going with strong lay outs. Now that I have gotten a bit better, I need to change the surface, and look to change how things are drilled in the future. I asked my question, as I knew being so deep on the approach isn't my game. I used to be a down and in, and now with less oil, I am playing way to deep. I have been trying to play more of the middle of the lane, aiming more around 15-18, then I earlier mentioned, more to get to the correct pocket.

What does your Frantic do?
-
The Frantic has been seeing the most playing time, as it checks up well, and I am playing a more comfortable line. The thing is it doesn't finish as strong and it shouldn't as the covers are so different.

I have a good friend who still bowls at a house with old wood lanes and little volume
he is a stroker, maybe 250 rpm
drilled up a freeze late last year with a longer pin and its perfect
if you cant get a freeze anymore, the new BLUR is also a good choice
with the right layout on 1 of these, you will be able to move back further right and play up the boards again
-
Drill up a Breeze or an Uproar or a Lights Out...weaker covers and weaker engine...
-
Impossible to say why your Frantic is not finishing "as strong." I would adjust the surface on one of the other balls first since you already have them.
Start with 500 as the base and step up until you see the reaction you are looking for.
I also like 500/4000 on some of my stronger pieces. 500/1000 and polish works well on several balls for me.
If you do not have a spinner and intend to bowl seriously, buy one and some basic supplies. That way you can experiment and find out what works best for you. This will get you closer to your goal than buying a new ball.
Of course, you can never have too many balls.

Always adjust cover first, second, and third before plugging. What is meant by that is if you don't get the desired look first time try a different surface combination. Personally, I like surface of 500/light polish on a lot of my equipment. For me this clears the heads (due to polish), but has plenty of underlying surface (500) to make the turn.
If that does not work for what I am looking for I change the combination to something else like 1000/3000 to make it go longer or 500/2000 to pick up sooner. With me being a stroller I feel like I need the underlying rough layer. But if you throw it slower, you would be totally different, and would need something different.
If that don't work I would think about getting a new addition rather than plugging everything. Many entry to mid performance lines should do the trick.

So I did get the Disturbed's surface adjusted to 4000 semi polished, so it still does have some surface , and I am very pleased with the results.
I now have the Marvel S as my heavy oil, Disturbed medium-heavy, 2furious med, and then the Frantic for my light-medium.
Going to run with this to start league and then see what happens.
I do appreciate all the input.

I would get a few Abralon pads to put in your bag
as the bag gets some laneshine, you can adjust the surface as needed.
just make sure to clean it first
