I'm just joining my first league this year. What's a lineage fee?

It's just the part of the overall league fee for the night that the bowling alley takes as payment.  Say that your total league fee is 15 dollars, and 11 dollars of that is "lineage."  That 11 dollars goes to the center to pay for your bowling, and the remaining 4 dollars goes into the league prize fund that they pay out at the end of the year.

Also, depending on your league, in addition to the lineage fees there may be a secretary fee (salary) and a donation to the local youth league system taken out before the remainder becomes the league prize fund.

$7.50 for the daytime senior leagues.  Not sure what they will be charging for the evening leagues or what it was last season as I did not bowl in them.  I will try to find out and post back later.

$12.75 in one league, $14.25 in another and $16 for a 4 game league.  The league that is $14.25 offers -20% food and a domestic beer costs $5.50.  Property values and taxes are some of the highest in the world.

Got it, thanks. Fortunately I'm not afraid to ask the dumb question.

So...is it something I should know? The league I'm joining costs I think $14. Might be $13. To me that's pretty good. I haven't really given much thought to where the money goes to per se.  Seems like a reasonable cost to play every week. And I can do something competitive.  Although the other alley I was considering I think the leagues cost significantly more. Like maybe 20.  I guess in that situation, I'd be wondering a bit more why it costs so much.  Likely culprit is higher lineage I suppose?

As long as you are paying for the league (league fees) it doesn't hurt to know where your money is going.  Sometimes a league is more expensive because one house charges more in lineage than another or because a league wants to have a bigger prize fund payout to the bowlers at the end of the league season.  As you can see in this brief survey, lineage fees vary across the nation and between centers just as the amount added to the prize fund is going to vary.

We pay $6.80 for a 4 game doubles league.  It is a senior day league.  I believe that the nighttime cost is $8.40 gor a 3 game set.  The competetion for bowlers is fierce.
At least 10 clean, well run, in good condition centers.
