Title: Possible causes for nicks and should you resurface if new?
Post by: JPbowling151 on January 12, 2018, 10:54:42 AM
Well after my 3 game set the other night, I noticed several scattered superficial nicks in between and around my finger and thumb holes, and few by my track. Now normally I don't care about these things since they aren't deep and mostly not in my track, what does bother me is that the two balls I used last night were fairly new balls, give or take 30 gms of use on them including last night.

What are possible causes to these nicks to appear? A loose nail/screw in the ball return or pin deck area, ball wheel guards etc.

Would or should you resurface to remove the nicks if you like the reaction from the current oob surface? I only ask cause the lanes offered to my balls resurfaced on their Haus resurfacing system free of charge...debating on whether or not I should take them up on their offer.

Thanks!...P.S last night was final position night for the first half and we won 1st place! lol

Majority of deeper nicks I have noticed either come from dumping it in the channel (spare ball) or a ball sitting spinning burning up on belts in the back of lanes.  That is cool they offered a resurface.  Might take advantage of free offer but in general I don't resurface a ball until it has pretty pronounced track marks on it.  Not big on OOB in general because I want a surface I can replicate but I also have a spinner.  If you are happy with current surface might hold off until end of season and get a resurface from a pro shop or take up their free offer then.  In general I only care about how a ball performs not how it looks.

If not in the track, I don't worry about them.

Report the nicks to the manager.  If they a re a reliable, they will repair them.

If they are on your track, and have substantial size I'd repair them.  If not, then a minor resurface job will usually take care of it.  Although I wish it were different, balls can get scratches, dings, scuffs, etc. from machinery (and stupidity of fellow bowlers).  It just happens.

There is a HUGE difference between what looks bad cosmetically and whether or not it really hurts performance.

Thanks for you help everyone! I reported the nicks to the manager and offered to resurface but I decided to leave them as is since the majority of nicks aren't on my track and are not deep at all, and I haven't noticed any performance difference at all. I'll post a pic of the balls when I'm at the lanes Tues since I keep them in my locker. It's just annoying to see new bowling balls nicked up so soon but it happens.
