POST YOUR WEIRD/STRANGE/OUT-DATED BOWLING SLANG
« on: November 20, 2008, 05:00:45 AM »
Alright, so I'm trying to compile an extensive dictionary of bowling terms and slang for Bowlers Journal, and I want everyone's help. We've already got hundreds of terms -- everything from Turkey to PAP to Adult Bumper Bowling to Count to Double-Wood -- but what I'm looking for now are the strange, weird, out-dated, and/or regional terms that one might easily overlook.

What have you guys got? Post 'em with a brief definition.

was watching us womens open and bo burton used "throwing her sunday shot" i think he described that as catching a handful

fluffing it: not hitting the ball much

Alright, since you're all dying to find out what a "Stadium Special" is (), I'll enlighten you . . .

It's a 4-9 (or 6-8 for a lefty) split.  We started calling it that when they were using the Twister pins in the National Bowling Stadium in Reno.  4-9 and 6-8 splits were quite common during that time.

Overheard during the men's travelling league...

"Hey Mike, the lane conditions today remind me alot of your sister."

Mike replies, "Wha? What the heck do you mean by that?"

"Dude, the lanes are WIDE OPEN with BIG BACK ENDS!"

"The whiff!" = missing an easy single pin spare, said like Bob Eucker in major League.

A really OLD, OLD, OLD one -
when someone shot great (in those days, 700+) - he shot "telephone numbers"...
