Bowling Anchor
« on: January 19, 2004, 06:16:04 AM »
Sawbones' topic on subs got me to thinking. A lot of the guys I bowl with dread being placed in the "anchor" position. I've had guys threaten to quit. Sometimes, we want to shake up our line-up to see if we'll score better and win more as a team, but the anchor position is me...and its non-negotiable. As I said in a previous post, I anchor my sub team when I bowl for them. Do any of you notice this? I don't get what all the taboo is about. So you bowl last. Its a game. Not life and death. Personally, I like being anchor. If the game is on the line, I want the ball. But I'm not suicidal if I fail.

when I was in my junior leagues, I bowled lead off, and was very comfortable in that position. However, in the last year, the team I joined put me at anchor cause I wanted it, no other guy wanted it. Comes down to that last shot, not to be cocky, but I want the ball in my hands, not any one of my other teammates.

I have no problem if we lose the match cause I leave a solid 10(or whatever), which I know happens. But 9 times out of 10, I am going to hit that shot because I WANT to be in that position, cause I know I can hit it.

Obviously the mental aspect of my game improved tremendously since moving to anchor, and glad I did, it improved my game greatly.

Tonight I subbed in a league that I am normally asked to bowl in the 2nd or 3rd position in. Due to the fact that the two high average bowlers on the team were bowling at The Masters (normally position 2 and position 5), we had to switch up the lineup. The lead off bowler half way through the first game came over to me and thought that he should bowl anchor, and not first, as the anchor bowler tonight normally bowls first. Everyone on the team is around 200-210 average (outside of the 3rd bowler who is in the 170's). To me a good anchor bowler is one you know in the clutch can throw 3 strikes in the tenth and handle pressure at any given moment during the game.

I have bowled every position in a 5 man league, and subbed in every position. I just do what I can to help the team bowl better...

Here's what I think a bowling team's line up should be.
1st bowler, is your leadoff bowler,  he should be your best spare shooter and most consistent in order to start off each frame w/ a mark.  your 2nd and 3rd bowlers should be your weakest bowlers w/ your 4th and anchor bowler being able to close out a match in the correct way.  With this lineup,  if your 2nd and 3rd bowlers do anything much above their average, you are always going to be tough to beat in a handicap league.

I don't care where I bowl just put me in the line and give me my ball and I'm there.

I like both leadoff and anchor.  Can't stand the middle.  I like either setting up a good game or coming through in the clutch.  I used to bowl mostly leadoff, but since getting a shot at anchor, I don't like leadoff quite as much.

Granted the game isn't won or lost in the 10th. You can look back at a game where you lost by 10 pins and count all the blown spares. Just multiply by roughly 11, and you would have won. But after your anchor goes against their anchor, that's the bottom line. Game over. That is where you pull it out or you don't. I don't want my worst spare shooter, or a guy with a low strike percentage up for my team in that situation.

I agree with Sawbones.  I don't care where anyone is nor does it matter.  You have 5 bowlers with 10 frames.  So what if an anchor bowler doubles in the 10th to win.  Maybe he had two opens early on and he wouldn't have needed the double.  Maybe it was the 3rd guy that doubles and shot 240 to give the anchor bowler a chance.

Anchor=Ego in my books.

I have faith in my TEAM for us to win, not one frame for the last bowler to make or break us.

In the two scratch leagues I'm in the team thats higher in the standings enters their lineup first. The other team matches up their lineup to the other because individual points are up for grabs as well as team points. Sometimes I'm all over the lineup. That being said I don't mind anchor in four man leagues. I hate it in five man leagues cause I feel like I have to wait a half hour to bowl in tenth frame.
