question about the rules
« on: December 08, 2004, 04:17:52 AM »
does anyone know if its illegal to place the ball down on the approach just before the foul line....the ball does not seem to trigger the foul lights, but maybe they have not been turned on for league.
when i'm playing the pba type shots, for me getting some extra friction at the point of release helps the ball reaction.....

lemme know your thoughts...thx

Im pretty sure it IS legal, its part of your approach. As long as its not like a whole lot. I believe the foul lights only go off if something of a certain speed goes past it, because I've seen people roll balls all the way down the approach on to the lane, and it doesnt go off.

It's not illegal, but since your ball picks up oil from the lane, releasing it behind the foul line may leave some residue fropm the what the ball has picked up on the approach, affecting other bowlers.

I really don't see what you are trying to gain from doing this.  You really need to learn to play the pattern correctly.  Your average tells me that you have some skill, and should have the capablities to learn to play the PBA-type patterns.

thx for your comments--you are right,i need to learn to play the shot better.my ball speed is fast,19mph,and when i drop it say a few inches before the foul line,i get a good backend...normally i put the ball far out onto the lane.....i guess i need to learn to control the ball speed for the shot.....we are currently on pattern c which i find tough...

The ball or any foreign object can not commit a foul. Per ABC rule 5a. "A foul is committed when a part of the player's body encrouches on or goes beyond the foul line and touches any part of the lane, equipment or building during or after a delivery." That does not mean I would recommend rolling your ball on the approach. If anything it can also cause loss of energy in the ball. After all the approach is dry. I also agree about pattern C being very difficult. I have not thrown on the new version yet, but found the 39 foot version to be a real challenge.
