Teammate stole prize money

Hey all,

I bowl in a sanctioned league, and was on vacation when they did the banquet where they gave away the cash prizes back in April. I had a teammate take the money for me who I thought I could trust to give it to me (over $200).

I have made numerous attempts to pick up the money, reaching out to him over Facebook, but he has made up lies for reasons he doesn't have the money, and has ignored my most recent messages.

I reached out to the President of the league back in July, who contacted him, and was told he had the money for me, which was clearly a lie. I reached out to the President again last week, who only said he would try talking to him again. I'm still waiting on a response there.

I did have a friend reach out to the local city association, who said there was nothing they could do on their end. Does anyone know if there is anything I can do other than cut my losses at this point? I'm not sure if this is something I could take up with the USBC. The guy is pretty well known in my area, and bowls in multiple houses throughout the city. It has stressed me out all summer considering I really could have used that money.

Based on the info you provided, your actions are:
1. Get a signed, notarized statement from the secretary and team captain that the money was dispensed to your teammate.
2. File at small claims at the court house.  Small fee is required which is levied against the defendant if he is found guilty.  Before the court session starts, they usually allow a few minutes for you two to settle without further court involvement.  If you don't come to an agreement (and paid then and there), all rise for Judge Judy.  Small claims is very informal and the burden of proof in civil claims is "he probably did it." vice "beyond reasonable doubt.  Verbal testimony goes a long way and with the signed affidavits, you're in good shape.
3.  Take the signed affidavits and provide copies to the local association.  They should suspend his sanction until settled.
4.  Finally, if he shoots the same league that he took your money from, you may be able to get the secretary to hold his end-of-season money for 2018. 

And "no", don't do the violence thing...sheesh.

I agree violence is not a option.  If you do, you will be the one owing HIM money and a lot of it, as well as maybe some jail time.
The suggestions expressed here are all good ones, except violence.

Violence sure is whole lot less enticing when get older and have things to lose and are terrified of going to jail as well.  Some bowler guy doesn't scare me but the gangs in jail here yeah no thanks.  Plus if you live in a place where everyone is armed like I do double bad idea.  Been in a few mostly drunken fights when younger in a much different place so won't be all moral but learned quickly not the life I wanted.

Bowling for donuts, couldn’t agree MORE: Sometimes in life we go through a situation or 2 that calls for retaliation, but as mentioned above, As you mature, you have to weigh the pro’s/con’s,  and determine if the risk worth the reward.

Hopefully you can get it resolved, but every so often we have to accept a loss, move on, and LEARN FROM IT, such as life.  Good luck.   P.A. Karma will bite him, remember that.

It’s also a painful lesson to learn, but a good one and shows who REALLY are your true friends. ‘There’s no honor amongst friends’.

What’s more important; A few hundred bucks, or your health??

Well said and I completely agree with you.
The "kickass" attitude is immature and only leads to a bad outcome for the one who wants to do the "ass' kicking.

If you think I'm wrong, then go ahead and "DO IT", and then let's us all know how that is working out for you????

Not so sure it's "immature", but whatever works for you I suppose. Life is about making decisions, and in doing so, living with them (consequences). I do believe in Karma and it's the pits when it catches up with you.  :o
