Rumor that Insert glue causing cracking?
« on: November 17, 2005, 02:27:24 PM »
Lately there has been talk going around about the coverstocks
cracking around the fingers and thumb holes of balls with inserts.
There has been a real rash of this going on here over the past several
weeks, many many bowlers finding cracks circling thier finger inserts
just lately.
The rumor has it that its the glue used on the inserts reacting with the newer coverstocks.
Any ideas?

Well my good man, I didn't say anything about bridge cracking.
I know about bridge cracking and its causes. This is different.

As for beveling, cracks caused by not beveling usually start
at the hole and travel outward and/or around.

Also these are not "older Balls" many are new ones only a few weeks old.

These are almost circular cracks around the finger
and/or thumb holes. Take a marker draw a circle around the hole
thats more what it looks like.

I think it is some type of stress cracking. I figure the drill bit used is getting dull or is dull and getting hot because its not cutting good. Thus heating the coverstock some and weakening it maybe around those areas.
Its possible that there is some kind of reaction between the material and the glue also. As for that I dont know.

Dont use cheap glue, use a good gel type superglue or that stuff turbo makes(very similar, if not the same) Thats part recent advice i got and recent experience too!!(the gel doesnt go all over the place, very easy to control the amount used as opposed to normal runny superglue)

Something else you should look for is the area that you are actually applying the glue to.  You will find that if you apply the glue where the coverstock joins the outer core (or slightly below), you will have far less issues with hairline cracking around the finger holes.  Super Glue contains materials that tend to "attack" the resins and polycarbonates that are found in bowling ball shells.  By placing the glue where the cover meets the outer core (usually about 1/2"-3/4" deep) you will find that this problem will be minimized.  I hope this helps.

Super Glue does interact with coverstocks and makes them slightly more brittle. Some coverstocks are worse than others.

This is not a new phenomenon, Brunswick danger zones and their Powerkoil 18 coverstock was notorious for cracking around insert holes.

This can be minimized by beveling the edges of the holes, using as small amounts of glue as possible, not drilling the bottom of the finger holes together, and leaving an adequate bridge size.

But regardless of precautions taken it can still happen.

You can try using Pliobond for the finger inserts.
