RE Joys of Handicap
« on: October 26, 2003, 08:56:33 PM »
While reading through the Joys of Handicap post, I thought of something to bring up again.  IMO, handicap + actual score should never be allowed to = more than 300 per game.  Just because a 170 avg bowler matches up and shoots 270 should not make it impossible for a scratch bowler to have the opportunity to tie with a perfect game. This, I think, is unfair.

To be truly fair, I feel that handicap should be totaled on a per game basis and not per series.  In this example, assume 100% of 220 for a 170 avg. bowler.  The 170 avg bowler's scores are 266-220-185.  With handicap, this would normally be 316-270-235 = 821.  My way it would look like this: 300-270-235 = 805.  A difference of only 16 pins, but in a tournament, that can be several spots.  I like this because I feel that to be truly fair, nobody can have over 300 for any one game.  And, you cannot calculate based on series because in my example, the 16 extra pins clearly came from ONE GAME, and should NOT be carried forward to help the next two games.

Agree or disagree?

Agreed.  Just in general there should be a cap in the amount of handicap any person can get for a single game.  Not just the example you stated.
