« on: September 30, 2005, 04:27:30 AM »
Is there a secret to staying behind the ball longer? I fill like I am behind the ball but when I look at video tape I see that I am coming around the ball to soon. Any thought?

Check your finger strength.  Coming around the ball is a way to reduce the strain on the fingers, especially if you tend to grip the ball and rip it.

For me....

I try and throw a backup ball.....open my wrist..and push with the upper palm of my hand.....

gives me the up the back roll I need.

Learned that through Carol Norman

I was taught to try to push with the ring finger.

umm, you're referring to the "index finger", not the ring finger no?

Yep, ring finger lead. Additionally, you can try to spread your index finger and shift some ball weight to it. This will take some pressure from your wrist and make a longer stay of the hand behind the ball easier. But Sawbones is right: staying completely behind the ball is very difficult, unless you have a really good wrist.
And another thought (just in case): a wrist device won't help you here, since it only prebvnet the wrist from breaking, but not your hand from turning too soon upon the release.
Staying behind the ball takes some real mental effort if you tend to top the ball. Training, training, training...

I have a side release but there is a dramatic difference in getting around the ball too quick and JUST RIGHT!

I believe problems I have had over the years with getting there too quickly have been caused by having an incorrect span difference.

The proper difference in your span can be predicted by laying a hand on a ball without your thumb in the ball.  Having your hand naturally cover the curve of the ball.  Note difference in length of middle and ring finger in this natural ball shaped cup position.

If middle finger is 5/16 longer than the ring then spans are equal.
If middle finger is 1/14 longer than the ring then the ring finger is 1/16 longer.
If middle finger is 3/16 longer than the ring finger then the ring finger span is 1/8 longer....and so on.

If middle finger is 3/8 longer then the ring finger is 1/16 shorter and so on.

THis IS so important.  I bowled with my ring finger longer and always had a tendancy to come around too early unless the span was TOO TOO long.

Then I tried middle longer and when I miss outside it comes roaring back too hard.

Finally I settled on dead even length.  Beautiful I'm gettin great side roll but NOT coming around too early!

Use the relationship above and you can help solve this problem.

NOTE many drillers just make everyone 1/8 longer on ring!  Often a good assumption.  May have screwed me up in a way for 4 yearS!

Old trick: Try to keep the inside part of your elbow inside your ring finger, as long as possible.
Will keep you from turning early. I've been videotaped once a week since last May...
it's pretty surprising to see what you are actually doing...
compared to what you think you are doing. Video is invaluable tool when you are trying to make game changes.
My coach zooms in on my release from the back, video tapes from the side and out in front (he stand on the gutter cap). Helps get a real feel for you are doing.
