Resurfacing a ball to many times?
« on: May 22, 2003, 12:06:51 AM »
I feel this is a good question for the ball reps on here. I have an old pearl beast that I have had for about eight years and it has about a 1000 games on it. I have resurfaced it dozens of times, and about half the labels and serial numbers are left. It still rolls true and hits good, but with that much of the surface gone can it affect its carry, and things like that? I know that each time you resurface a ball it gets smaller, even if it is just a 1/100th or a 1/1000th of an inch.
I'm sure that somewhere right now there is someone bowling a with a ball that has no labels on it what so ever and striking every frame and saying who needs a new ball. Just wanted to get your opinions on this subject.

Thanks

I've bowled with a resin ball that had over 1500 games on it and had no visible label (the original red pulse). I resurface "only" about every 200 games but when I did resurface I had to take more. The ball was working ok but it got where it was so small the machines didn't want to pick it up all the time.

That is the only real limitation I see. Now I'm sure if you would go nuts eventually it would get so small that it would lose some of it's effectiveness but that would be awhile.

I have resurfaced and/or baked my Speed Zone many times.
I just replaced it with a brand new one - but only because a machine broke out the bridge.
I think the ball still had lots of games left - although I'm sure it has well over 1000 games on it.
The ABC does have a minimum size limit - I wonder how that can be checked short of checking the ball at ABC Nationals?

If you look in the 2002-2003 ABC/WIBC Playing Rules handbook on page 50, you will find the information you need.  Typically, if you can no longer read the logo or serial number, the ball is no longer legal for competition.

There are balls that are terrible after one re-surfacing and then there are yours. Tons of variables - so, the only arbiter of how many is the user in how happy he/she is with the ball after the job is done. Really.

Of course, that's besides the new rules that state the balls name and serial number MUST be plainly visible and th eminimum size regulation.

I've read in some magazine some years ago that a smaller diameter ball carries to 10 better. (RH)

Reasoning is that it hits the 3 pin lower causing it to lift and hits the 6 higher, causing it fall low to hit the 10.

the way to get the most mileage out of a bowling ball is to lightly resurface it only as much as needed---before it gets a heavy track. you should be able to resurface a ball appx. 25 times in this manner before the ball is actually too small to use.
