What exactly do these terms mean in a ball? I've tried to figure it out but it doesn't make sense to me. I've searched the forums for this subject but haven't found it. Can anyone give me a good explanation of these?

Try coming to the deep south and seeing what happens when it snows or sleets. Slow is your friend. All wheel drive gives people a false sense of common sense and driving skill.

The cover and the manufactures intended/stated purpose for the ball are big things to pay attention to. They try really hard to match the coverstock with the right core to get the intended desired reactions.

'Intended desired reactions' can also equate to marketing....

Waiiiiiiiiit you mean every new release that takes the previous release and makes it even stronger, for heavier oil, with more backend reaction then previously imagined thanks to new developments in the lab for todays "new oils" is related to marketing????

Well now I don't know who to trust.

New oils???  Yeah.  Whatever.  Pretty soon, unless you are rev challenged and/or speed dominate, we wont be able to control "entry level" equipment.  I watch people in my league at times using ball likes Tropical Heats and Cyclones and if they get it to a certain spot too quickly, the ball is hooking at 30 feet.  There is nothing like only getting through the first 6 frames of game 1 and the track is already frying up.

Sorry....not trying to hijack as I know this thread is about RGs and Diffs...LOL!

Tropical Heats are one thing but when your biggest hooking cover from 6 years ago is on your entry level ball now, that is scary. The Cyclone is a big bang for the buck kind of ball.

Yes my favorite thing to read and hear from bowling manufactures and people in the business is "todays new oils".

I'll triple back that concept. The power of the Cyclone and the Tropical Heat would have destroyed almost any PBA tournament in 1995 - 2000. Now they're entry levels balls????
Obscene!!

That makes me wonder about the advance of technology in participation sports, like golf and tennis. It seems like technology in bowling has so far outpaced what participants can get from it, by allowing the incompetent/untalented to compete with the competent/talented. Is it that way in golf and tennis?

In golf, there used to be a saying: "Drive for show, but putt for dough".

While we don't have that in bowling, the equivalent would be "Strike for show and spare for dough", but today, spares don't mean crap. It's all about striking and new ball technology, together with center owners pandering to the lowest common denominator (the 3 rev, 20 mph league bowler), have allowed the untalented to compete and even surpass the talented. (FYI I do not regard myself as one of the talented.)

Does golf technology allow more accuracy in putting or just allow Fred "Golfer" to drive like the pros?

Guess I'll quadruple back that. Oil is something that is scarce and when you apply it people get upset. I have never understood it. People complain that there is no oil but then when they get it, they complain because their high performance ball doesnt cover 39 boards and roar to the pocket. But then,..... it's never the bowler, only the ball.

As far as golf, i was asking the same question to a friend earlier this morning about the "anchored" putter. The putter is designed in short answer to take the swing out of putting, there in turn taking the skill out of it. He also made a comparison for me of that to THS taking the skill of out bowling. The reason I asked is because the USGA is banning the "anchored" putter or working on that resolution.

2 years ago, my home house worked over that summer on a house pattern, after numerous complaints about the shot becoming "wide open" that would provide more oil in the heads and oil outside of 5. After the start of league, 3 weeks later, almost every "scratch bowler" complained about the shot because they couldnt hook the ball. It was ridiculous to see the number of bowlers who called themselves scratch bowlers complain about not being able to hook the ball from outside 5, but isnt that what you asked for?

The biggest gripe for me, and I rarely say anything to center staff people, is not so much the oil, but the volume and the taper.  10:1 ratio is simply retarded (if that offends anyone I apologize).  Lane people will say you cant put more oil out there or balls wont hook.  Ummmmm......yes you can.  It is more a matter of where you put it.  THS doesnt have to be 10:1 ratios.  So, yes.  If you bump up the volume, the volume in the MIDDLE of the lane will be so heavy even 500 rev rates will have a hard time getting the ball to read the pattern.  HOWEVER, if you drop to say 5:1 ratio and add more units across the entire pattern, then the track doesnt fry up in 5 frames and you are in over/under hell.  For christs sake...the USBC has it figured out with the USBC Tournament, though they are 2.5:1 ratio.  But, in Baton Rouge during team event, the head oil held up pretty well and moves were not very drastic.

There needs to be some happy medium between the THS and the USBC patterns.  Then, the center managers and lane mechanics need to put their foot down and lay those patterns down.  You can still have hook at the 5 board and you can still have push in the middle.  It more a matter of people using their brains.

Here is another interesting thought to mull over:    There have been so many advances in ball technology and all these wonderful new oils that have hit the market (rolling my eyes).  What about advances in lane surfaces?  We have gone from lacquer to wood to synthetic.  What about some advancement that offers even less friction than the synthetics you see out there today?  Then maybe oil volume wouldnt have to be as much of an issue.  Thoughts?????
