Where does the ball begin to Flare?
« on: February 07, 2008, 06:03:56 AM »
Just curious, At what point does the ball begin to Flare - Laydown, in the heads, mids, at the friction?

What happens if the ball has not 'finished' flaring before it hists the pins

I am not a ball technician I just throw the things but I would just like to know.

As soon as you let it go.  That's why after putting a piece of tape on your suspected PAP, you need someone behind you with sharp eyes to see if it's stable off your hand and for the first 10' or so.  Modern balls start to flare immediately.

Some of the new balls out, like a storm passion would flair in the air, because of the strong mas bias, others like the morich RevLrg, roto grip oddessy would do it too.

Yes, they will flare in the air with some loft. It's a good thing if the ball doesn't stop flaring and most don't before it hit the pins. If it does, it'll be rolled out and your carry will suffer if it happens too soon before the pins. =:^D

You are correct, the core wants to re-orientate itself and move towards its preffered spin axis as soon as it spins free - upon the release, being in the air or on the lane.

About effective flare... I am not with you on this. The most effective ball is the one that just stops hooking before it enters the pins, with a roll - this is just the point when the ball delivers its core energy into the forward roll you need to drive through the deck. Many factors will play a role, e. g. revs, speed, friction etc., but AFAIK the most effective shot is the one that just gets the ball to the pocket a split second before its tops hooking?

You're not with me on this..? Notice how I said "too soon". I agree that a ball rolled out just as it hits the pocket can have excellent carry. This is why I said "too soon". If it rolls out too early, your carry will suffer. Do you agree..? =:^D

You're the only one so far with a differing opinion.  Care to share more?

A ball that is drilled to flare will start to seek its stable rotational axis as soon as it is released. This generally will start in the air.

It will stop flaring once that stable rotational axis is reached.

A ball that has stopped flaring or never did or could flare can still be hooking as it reaches the pins.
