« on: March 23, 2008, 03:15:07 PM »
Ive noticed my backswing decreased quite drastically latley and i dont know why. I seem to not have that free swing i use to. My swing is getting behind my back and I feel like im dragging it to the line insted of just letting it swing. any tips or advice to get back to where i was .

Not everyone has a few hundred dollars to blow.  And if you need 300 bucks worth of lessons there's alot more wrong than just a backswing lol.

c-hop - It sounds like theres a little grab at the beginning of your approach/pushaway.  Relax the hand and arm at the start and let gravity do the work into the backswing.

If your swing is getting behind your back your pushaway might be going off to one side causing you to loop around your back.  At your start line up your arm with the direction you want your swing to go and follow above.

But of course a coach you trust; silver level or not, will be able to pinpoint what you might be doing.

Deadbait, kidj - get rid of your egos.  Every bowler needs coaching, no matter what level you get to. We all have something we can get better at be it physically or mentally.  If you have that much distrust for a "silver level certified coach" you may need a refresher on your mental game.

Coaching is all about developing trust, if you don't trust a coach you don't have to listen to them or incorporate their teachings.  Silver level is just a certificate acknowledging certain levels of teaching.  Most silver coaches are great, some aren't.

Stand in front of a mirror and hold your arm in your stance without a ball in line with the side of your body. Let it fall back. You may notice that it goes back and towards your left shoulder.

Now hold the ball closer to the center of your chest and do a swing. Does it go straight back?

I had the same problem and moving the ball in my starting stance closer to the center of my chest fixed it. I open my shoulder up quite a bit which gives the arm more free access to move in all directions. If you stand with your shoulders square and let your arm drop back, you'll notice it is restricted as to how free it can move. Open your shoulder and that limit goes away somewhat.

When my coach changed that and we looked at it from behind on video, I was sold. I practiced yesterday with my camcorder and noticed that I was neglecting to start it in the first game (damn you, brain). It's funny how it feels like my arm goes straight back when in fact it does not.

When practicing your armswing you might find it easier to start with your slide foot advanced about 1 foot. I do this and it makes a much more stable platform when I'm checking my armswing. You can really let the ball swing free without feeling like the ball is trying to pull you off balance.
