I'm very excited about my first trip to Nationals. I do have a few "rookie" questions.
1) In layman terms, what is the difference between the D/S and Teams patterns? Which is longer/shorter? What's the typical angle and ball for each?
2) Is it really necessary to bring 10+ ball arsenal? I normally just bring 5 + spare for local tournaments covering each ball reaction: traction, continuous, skid/flip, etc.
3) Where are some good eating places?
4) Any other advice for a Nationals rookie? I plan on just enjoying the atmosphere and experience.

1) Eh, they're different but both are still difficult. No real "typical" anything except for the fact that shot-making and a great spare game is essential.
2) No to 10+ balls. I'll have 5+ a plastic and if I can't get it done w/those.....it's on me. I typically find each year I'll have 1 of those in my hand for 6-7 games. Bring an array of motions and surface prep (only need 1 true burn ball w/polish IMO)
3) In Syracuse, I have no idea. In Vegas, everywhere.
4) If you plan on enjoying the atmosphere and experience, you're in the right mindset. Prepare for a hell of a challenge, but if you're making great shots with a good match-up equipment wise and on your spares.....a good AE total is there for the taking.

For lane play there is a section at ball reviews under the general category of USBC nationals. Several talk about their lane play and ball choices.
I don't take more than 4 myself. Seems like there is a restriction of 8.
We went to Delmonico's one night and got a good steak. A little pricey but good food and service.
Relax, roll the ball don't throw it. Make your spares. If you are not use to tough sport shots it maybe a kick in the teeth but take it as a learning experience.

For your first time, just enjoy the experience.
But one piece of advice I always give first timers. Be sure you take shoe covers. While in the squad room, put your bowling shoes on and tape your fingers if you use tape. Depending on your lane assignment, you may have only a couple of minutes before the start of Shadow when you get to your lane.

another awesome place, not sure where you are staying though, is near Carrier circle
call "Mothers Cupboard". small, open 6am to 130 pm 7 days a week, always busy. Amazing portions and just great food, for a small price. Look these 2 up.
Go to your booth of choice and ask them about what you have, they will suggest some surface changes possibly and its cheap. (If you go to the Hammer Booth, ask for Dan Smith or Bob Brust) these guys know what works out there

Lanes have a ton of volume, oil this year, and start off playing very tight, especially for d/s. You will need surface on your equipment. 1000 abralon is about right. I usually don’t like asymmetrical for nationals, but this year they are a factor. Agree with one shiny ball for when they start to burn. Have fun, and good luck.

Texas Roadhouse has better ribs. My group was not impressed.

Wow, everyone in my group loved Dinosaur BBQ. I have my own smoker and consider myself a BBQ junkie, and thought they had great ribs and chicken. I thought they had a good beer selection as well. Plus lots of good eye candy too!

Everyone in our group loved Dinosaur BBQ as well. Thought it was excellent! Also the Ale N' Angus right down the street from the OnCenter was very good as well. Franco's was also really good for late night pizza delivery.

Wow, everyone in my group loved Dinosaur BBQ. I have my own smoker and consider myself a BBQ junkie, and thought they had great ribs and chicken. I thought they had a good beer selection as well. Plus lots of good eye candy too!
Also a rib junky here. 1st try was a 3 portion sampler. all I remember is how good the ribs were. went back the next day for full rack ribs and double mac n cheese. was to die for
had 4 the first day and 8 the 2nd.
i think I remember a few beers there as well.
One fo the nights out was a wine and whiskey bar downtown, not cheap, but lots of fun there + plus i might be a whiskey snob as well

That BBQ was mediocre at best. If you’re from Kansas City, Memphis or Chicago you know what high quality BBQ is and Dinosaur just ain’t it. It’s like a Famous Dave’s, a subpar , chain BBQ joint.

OnCenter had a nice setup, but as far as quality of stuff to do, Syracuse is/was the pits. C'mon Vegas!

Agreed, I didn’t enjoy Syracuse. We ended up at that casino outside town every night, and I barely gamble. I just didn’t have anything better to do.

Agreed, I didn’t enjoy Syracuse. We ended up at that casino outside town every night, and I barely gamble. I just didn’t have anything better to do.
Haha, I had a nice poker session at Turning Stone that ended up making the entire USBC trip a net positive so I can't complain. That was definitely the highlight for me. .....besides the pregnant junkie prostitute that had to be escorted off of the hotel property just as I was checking in. I thought I wouldn't see much of that since moving away from Vegas, wrong!
