Local pro shop guys

I have a question for you. Does it seem to be normal practice to get pissed if a person who bowls at your center buys a USED ball online, and then asks you to plug and drill the thumb on it? NOT FOR FREE, but FOR RETAIL.

I agree a week or so is no problem. I dropped mine off on a sunday, he said come back wed, ok I go back we, not even started, he says come back sunday, sunday comes, nothing at all. He decides come back wed again. The kicker is when I call him to ask is it ready yesterday, he gets a smartass attitude and tells me that if he says it will be ready, then it will be. It was ready last night, other than it would NOT come off my thumb, AT ALL. He sands it out and I can get it off my thumb, but its rather painful. Left it again last night, he said it would be fixed first thing today. We'll see I guess.

If you pay me, I'll drill it, don't care to know where you got it, unless I want to get the same deal myself

BUT, once in a while, do support your local shop by actually buying the ball from them... specially if you want them to be around when you need ball work done!    Take advantage of the sales... sometimes they can match internet prices if you take into consideration the shipping!

What do you think?!

Chappy, I do my best to buy what I can from the guy, or I did anyway. this year I've bought 2 balls and a pair of shoes from him. One ball he had in stock, the other and the pair of shoes took 3 weeks to get. I think 3 weeks was a little excessive but he says he got busy and forgot to order them..

I agree with that but I haven't done that yet, but I have sent him people that do buy the ball there, so that should count!! I have even sold stuff to him in the past because I can get stuff cheaper than him.. To me thats the problem in this whole pro shop/internet problem. When someone not even in the bowling equipment business can buy stuff cheaper than a pro shop, thats a problem..

That means the distributors pro shop buy from are maiking a killing!!

The way I see it if the internet is cheaper than the distributors, as is the case sometimes, then the shops could buy these items from the internet and sell it in the shops... this, instead of worrying so much about the how or why.  But I also understand pro shop owners and investors having a hard time with all of this!  It must be nerve racking.  (I just drill the stuff...)

I think the best thing anyone can do for their local pro shop is spread the word.  If you bowl something the night your driller drilled you a new ball, say it loud, say it proud.  But don't forget that there are bad days... don't blame your drillers for those either!!!

Oh, yeah... my biggest pet peeve is when shops promise a job for a certain day and then it's not done... I rather tell you it's going to take a week or two than have you come in 3 days asking, "where's my ball, you said it would be ready?"  I think no shop should promise what they can't deliver...

Well here's my take on it.....I work in a pro-shop with just two regular employees in it....we have some different beliefs on things but most of the time we agree with what one of the other is doing....I try my best not to step on his feet and the same with him.....one thing we both do agree on is online sales....the only reason they are so cheap is the bulk they are bought in....now for this reason online shops can offer them at low prices....but most charge between 38-50 dollars to drill it(inserts and slug most of the time).....average local pro-shop charges the same thing.....plus with online pro-shops you have to pay shipping on most.....and the dreaded "ONLINE WARRANTY".....they don't have a shop to take it to....you have to ship it back and then have to wait for them to send one back and that can take upwords of 2 weeks or more.....the thing is....people see low price and want to jump right on it....but lets flash back a minute....that customer came in and asked me questions for about 30 minutes a night for a week before they bought that ball....now who provided the customer service me or Buddies(example)....I did so they took what I info I gave them and ran with it over to someone else.....ANYONE and I mean ANYONE that is in any type of customer service business has to be a little peturbed at the moment....another example of that is your customers going somewhere else to get it(another shop)....had the same thing happen....guy asked me questions bout the Rule GP2 for a week or two....I told him we couldn't get it just yet cause it was not released for the general public yet....so what does he do....he goes to another city (bout an hour away from our shop) and has some staffer for that company drill him one up....not to mention his buddy did the same thing but we had the ball he wanted he just heard the big words that guy was using and probably went ohhhhhhhh ahhhhhhhh.........and as far as plugging I don't care where you get them from you bring it in and I plug it......but back to the point....I believe that your local shop offers 10x better service....reason....you can LOOK at them.....when's the last time you stood across the counter with someone from Buddies....we offer a warranty that pretty much guarantees if you have a ball and it messes up on you(bridge cracks or something) we will replace it witin a week or less.....I CARE about my customers so when they take their business elsewhere after asking me questions and me working with them patiently and carefully then yeah I AM GONNA BE ALITTLE HOT....because who is being rewarded for that....me or someone else???

Yeah, and that brings me to my second pet peeve...

If you are not going to buy it from me, tell me straight up... I may still spend time talking to you and helping you pick a ball but at least I KNOW that I am investing in you because I want to, not because I am getting a sale.

Sometimes I spend A LOT of time with a customer and then they turn around and buy it somewhere else.  It's like working for free.  It's a little frustrating.

I agree completely with what you guys are saying:
If you spend the time with the customer, you should get the sale

My problem is that mine was not available to the pro shop, its been discontinued for years! He even told me my best bet would be to find one on ebay or somewhere. THEN he acts pissy cause I find one. oh well..

Well, I guess they can get their money anywhere but We spend about 200 a WEEK in there bowling and buying beer (4 of us).. Since this guy is also the center manager, you would think that might mean something to him..

No my driller is great. I used to drill as a partial owner so I/We would never ever get pissy or turn down any business.
Some people are on tight budgets and they have to do what they have to do financially.
I was more than happy to give advice oin what to buy even if i knew they were not ordering from us. it's better to be like that then lose potential future business.

I know the guy that does my equipment right now does get great prices and gets deals on discontinued equipment through his connections.
To support him I buy my equipment only from him.
He is a good guy and I don't mind paying a few extra bucks to him.
He cuts me a good deal because I do this and send people to him for work.

Plus when you find a great driller, hang on to him/her.

I've never had a problem with someone coming in with a ball to plug because we still make our money from the plugging. As for a new ball that is why hte shop I am at charges $65.00 to drill it.  By charging that to drill plus slug or grips it actually puts the price the same or more than you could have bought it from us as we include dlug and grips with a high performance ball purchase. I've actually had customers call me about a special they saw online and i have told them to buy it

My driller doesn't get upset at me for bringing in used balls to plug and re-drill, because when I do buy new balls to replace some of the older ones in my lineup, I buy them from him. I've also brought some extra business his way, so he's happy all around. He charges fair prices for the plugging and re-drilling, and when I buy multiple balls at the same time I get a reasonable discount for buying a lot of equipment at the same time.

I'm happy all around as is his pro shop.

I have no problem plugging a ball regardless of where it comes from. What erks me is, I use to have a customer who would come in and say "is this a good ball for me, and how would you drill it to do this , in this house?" So I spend 15 -30 minutes explaining the why or why nots, two days later he comes in with the same ball drilled the same way we had talked about from another pro shop. This has happened 3 times with this same person, now when he comes in ( knowing he's wanting info ) I ignore his requests. By the same token he'll drive 100 miles round trip to save $15 bucks on a ball, but he'll ask me to do his resurfacing on all his equipment to save a trip of 100 miles and to save $4.00 per ball, go figure!!

On the other hand I have a husband and wife that in the last calendar year have spent $1526.00 on new balls, shoes, and plugging their older balls for their son. They buy a new ball on average every 60-90 days, and that is not counting any other accessories. They get an additional 10% off on anything they buy due to the amount of money they spend, the next guy comes in he buys the same ball and pays $24.00 more on the same ball, (he buys a ball once every 3-4 years whether he needs one or not, lol) and asks why? Is this an unfair practice? I don't think so, take care of your customers and they will take care of you.

Just a follow-up, got my pulse back yesterday (sunday). Thumb was still too tight, driller was VERY nice this time, overly helpful(if possible). He suggested I try a little easy slide in the thumb until he could fix it. That worked wonders, due to the tightness of the thumhole I did not grip the ball at all, my release was MUCH better. We talked about it a little and decided to leave it alone until summer (or whenever my thumb swells too big). Going to go give it a shot tonight and see how it goes.
