Title: second shift ball for a stroker
Post by: xrayjay on April 21, 2015, 11:44:21 AM
I've been out of touch with NIB's in the last few years, and I'm in the market for a ball that I can use for second shift that starts after a league with 5 per team. The THS pattern is medium length and low in volume.

My specs:
16.5 mph down lane
<300 rpms
<10* tilt
65*-75* rotation

I was wondering if the Tag would be a good option....or the breeze......

What about the new Storm Ride that is available today? I have one getting drilled today and should be able to throw it in our men's league tomorrow night

I like the roll of the scream/shout.  I get wrecker carry, more length, less movement off the spot!

What do you usually start with on a fresh shot at this particular house?  That's a piece of information that might help others answer your question.

At this house I normally use a medium solid at 4k oob medium RG and high diff. W/ layout
65x4.5x30 and bowling in fresh.

The Motiv Tag would fit well here.  That ball is angular off the spot but still very clean through the front and carries well.

I agree.  Brunswick and Radical also have options for you.  On the Brunswick side, the LT-48 is a great piece for the conditions you describe and very affordable.  Put an aggressive drill on it.  They also have the Brute, the Strike King, and soon to be released Soul and Soul Mate.  Radical is releasing the Rack Attacks and also has the Grease Monkeys.

I saw a Storm Ride yesterday and for what it's worth the ball is very good looking.

The Arson Low Flare is another ball to consider.  --  JohnP

It really depends on how you are trying to play the lanes on the second shift.  I cant imagine not getting pretty deep and I too am a stroker.  I usually try to use a relatively strong pearl, and if I cant get a look at 4th arrow, I go to a tamer pearl drilled for length.  Current balls I would use are first a Marvel Pearl, and then if that is too much my Cobalt Vibe would be an option.  As othesr have said everyone makes balls with these kind of specs.

My personal choice for the conditions you mentioned, and I'm a stroker as well, is the Storm Supernatural.

I just got the tag and its pretty strong just a couple boards under the forza playing around 14 to 19 board at the arrows. The tropical breezeyy on the other hand is the go to ball if you want to play that direct straight shot at 10 board, does it's job going down and in

I think the super natural ( or other urethane ) can be a good option if it lets you stay outside of 10 board.  However that is a big if.  The worst situation for me with urethane is when I have to go away from the pocket.  Thus my caveat in the earlier post.  More typically I have to get deep on a second shift condition, and need a pearl resin that will make a strong late change of direction from deeper inside.

The Supernatural, for me, lets me stay on the right side, when other balls make me move way left.  I like this ball because it goes longer than my Grenade, with a slightly stronger backend.

Hello XrayJay:

Your specs are similar to mine. On our second shift THS, I have had a whole lot of
success with the Columbia Eruption Pro Hybrid. It allows me to stay on top of the
shot most nights, without the need to move much left (I'm Rt- handed). We bowl
on HPL 9000. The THS is 41 ft, 10:1 ratio, 25ml volume (Kegel Ice oil). The league
that bowls the first shift is a 5 man league. It is comprised of higher average bowlers of all styles and age range. These fellows beat up the pattern quite a bit by the time we arrive.

The Eruption Pro Hybrid allows me to keep my angles straight even on the "burn", with good carry to boot.  Of course there are those nights when this is not the ideal option, but this is relatively rare. In addition, please keep in mind that my environment may not replicate your second shift conditions where you bowl.

Best of luck to you!

For lighter volumes I like to have 2 options:

A pin up polished high diff ball to go long and peel off the spot (quintessential skid-flip)
A pin down polished low diff ball to control the back end (control ball)

Right now a pin up 400A and a pin down UpRoar are filling the bag for me quite nicely.

I picked up a Jet Pilot.  It's a very good ball when friction is present.  Really seems to get nice length, and a milder backend (that's just right when the backends are flying).  If there is carry down, this ball will give you fits...but otherwise great for drier conditions....   plus it looks cool!
