How much are most leagues paying their secretary?

krakken,

if you go back and actually read my origianl post, you will see i am in agreement with them making the money.(depending on the circumstance)  and i have been the sec/treas of numerous leagues and know how much work it is.  my point to my last post was due to the circumstance that was laid out by the above poster.

bowler sorry I quoted the wrong post.  That was directed towards Joe Falco

In our league (16 teams/5 man), the positions were separate.  Secretary got a flat $600/year and Treasurer got $300.  I've held both positions and I found the Treasurer role to be more difficult because you're trying to collect, count and reconcile the envelopes during bowling, which is a major distraction.

Whatever it is, it's probably not enough.  We pay $0.40/man/night.  I got that over the summer for a 10-team doubles league and it was peanuts.  The toner for my printer cost me $80.  I made about $100 in salary.  Granted, I'll have that toner cartridge next summer too.

Getting the league sanctioned, doing awards, keeping scores, doing the treasury duties and all the other stuff we do is not trivial.  If there's $1 missing from the bank account, be ready to get your butt dragged across the coals.  It's not light work, it sucks.  In my little league, I didn't have to chase people down for money, pretty much everyone paid on time every week.  Not that hard with only 20 people in the league.  We also didn't do a lot of awards (no one in a scratch league is interested in awards beyond 300/800 and we didn't have any).

Still it's thankless.  I got one person who said "Thanks for doing this".

This is what I get for doing secretary/treasure position $450.00 a year plus expenses we have 70 people on our league but we also charge a sponsor fee of $25.00 per team which covers a big portion of the secretary fee we had one bowler pipe up and said that the secretary should only get $200.00 fee. We have had the same fee $450.00 for three years now. I think next year I'll nominate him for the job and let him do it for $200.00 and see what he thinks.

There are many bowlers here that have reported paying acceptable amounts for TREASURER ..  I think my point was to not allow those quoting high fees to be considered acceptable. I would put a standard up that would say when a treasurer is being paid MORE THEN what it would cost to bowl the season they are OVER PAID! Assume a $20 per week fee (that includes line fee and prize fund) for 36 weeks would cost the individual bowler $720 for the season .. add $25 for Sponsor fee and we'll say $750 .. that lets the Treasurer bowl free and share in the prize fund!

This task is not to SUPPORT the Treasurer but to pay for a job! SUPPLIES? Isn't that stretching it? Time lost bowling league .. YES .. Chasing down delinquents is a job that should be done by the President! Picking up envelopes .. 20 teams equal 20 envelopes .. not turned in by the start of 2nd game ..to the desk for an announcement ..don't think that happens too often that we should make a point of it!

If you want to make money ($2,000 per league) get a job!

This maybe a hard look at this but IN MY OPINION that's my feeling!

Again, you think they are overpaid because you have never done it.  If you had done it you would see that "free bowliing" isn't always enough.

Wed night mixed league.  5 bowlers per team 16 teams, we pay $17 a night.  That is a ton of work, 80 bowlers a night entering scores, tracking fees. All that.

You just don't have a good sense of all the work involved.  all you see is what they do at the bowling center.  Most of the work happens at home after league, or later in the week.

We are all entitled to our opinions, I just think yours is an uninformed opinion and if you take on the duty this winter, you will change your tune.

Secretary work I've done .. I created a program in FOCUS (something I took from the job) and developed output that duplicated the weekly sheets provided by the Center. Purpose was to assure that my logic was correct. It was a cinch and I did everything except created the recap sheets to be used for weekly bowling! It also could have been done but I decided not to pursue the job!

Treasurer I've never tried. BUT it is NOT a task that requires more PAYMENT then FREE BOWLING! ERIN suggest that this IS THE TREASURER full means of SUPPORT! That would make them PROFESSIONAL TREASURERS .. never run into this type!

Again, you did a part at the beginning, not week in and week out.

Well you can just stick to your opinion, but again you have nothing to base it on other than what you think goes into it.  I still say if you did it for a season you would change your mind.

Glad the people in my league appreciate the secretary and know what a pain it is.  Wouldn't want a league full of folks that think like you.

30 five men teams for 36 weeks at .20 per night. 150 x .20 x 36 = $1080.00. For sure, that is enough. The scores are kept by the center, but she does take up the envelopes and keep up with the mula.

I could not see double that amount as being reasonable. Any decent bookkeepper could reconcile the 30 envelopes, either by ledger or computer in less than an hour. Thirty bucks for an hours work. More than most make. But you couldn't pay me that to deal with some of the ignoramuses in our last league.
