Has the economy claimed any centers in your area?
« on: December 23, 2008, 06:00:51 AM »
We all know these are rough economic times, and some centers are really feeling the financial crunch.  Curious as to whether anyone's seen a local center go under in the past year, and why they think it bit the dust?

A brand new 4 million dollar center 70 minutes from here closed up, but mainly because they put it in a small college town where everyone drinks and skiis instead of bowls.

They just put $2 million into my local center and they are doing just fine.  Also in a ski area of VT

our local amf center is actually doing better now with open play.  the bad thing is that it has encouraged them to do even less for the few leagues that still bowl there.

We've lost 3 in the past year.
All 3 AMF centers. That leaves us with 2. AMF that is.

We lost 2 from our association at the end of last year and it looks like 2 more in 2009. It's hard to see the one go as my Father used to be part owner in the 70's.

Local AMF center will probably be gone after the current leagues end in June.  About a year and a half ago there was a possibility it would close, but the lease was signed.  Word was it was a 5 year lease, it was actually only a 2 year lease.

Our local Association headquarters were there.  They recently moved, so it looks like this time they will close.  The owner of the land can make more by building a strip mall.

To be honest, the center has not really been kept up well and everything from snack bar items to bowling has been overpriced for some time.

Losing at least one center in Toledo this year ... owner is selling his 64 lane building and property to the medical center next door. Health trumps bowling, to the tune of about $5 mil.

With unemployment running at just over 10% in the city for the month of November, I expect that this might not be the last.

Well I only have 2 centers in my area, both of which are privately owned, and neither of them are going away any time soon.

Im not too far away from Jersey, but all of the big Jersey houses ive been too don't seem to be closing either, so I guess my answer is no.

Mine is trying to get a Liquor license. I think it is almost a done deal. That should help things out.

We got 1 place closing down at the end of the month. It's more of a good thing then anything else that its closing down. The place has had more than 12 different owners in the last 6 years, the pin setters are old and brokedown prone, the lanes are beyond their normal usage (tracks the hell out of your ball) plus theres never a lot of oil on the lanes. Just enough to protect the lane but not enough for more then 1-2 people bowling more then 2 games. I can get a plastic ball to hook 30 boards at this place. Their snack bar is slim their alcohol is overpriced and there is no proshop.

All the other centers are doing well and showing no signs of closing.
