Send Help - Timing Vanished
« on: November 28, 2018, 08:25:35 AM »
Hey Everyone,

Two weeks ago, I had a great week of bowling and my timing felt remarkable. The this week, in my two leagues, my great timing vanished into thin air and now I feel like a baby learning how to walk.

Two weeks ago, I was getting the ball behind me quickly and crisply (got that floating on a cloud feeling for six great games), allowing me plenty of time to slide, and giving me a nice flat spot at the bottom. Then these last six games, I'm fighting getting the ball behind me, making me really rush the last two steps, and grab the ball at the bottom. It almost feels like my body is in the way of my swing, no matter what I'm doing.

What would be some good drills to work on to smooth out my timing issue? I'm open to any and all suggestions!

Edit: I don't have any videos handy, but I do have one on my phone that I'll share when I get a moment.

Sometimes when trying to get timing back I get too analytical about exactly when I'm starting the ball movement in relationship to my steps. When that happens, there is a "walkup drill" that can be useful. It kind of acts as a "reset" button of sorts.

Stand WAYYYYY back off the approach. Even if you have a step up to get on the lanes, stand behind that.

Place the ball in your normal set position and start casually walking toward the foul line.

At some point your brain kicks in and your swing and steps kick in to deliver the ball.

Do this a few times and see what happens.

Guess the standard advice would be perhaps think about getting some lessons from the pro shop.  What I do to work on my timing is to use the power trainer I got from Eileens (http://www.eileensbowlingbuddy.com).  They also have path trainers for working on your footwork but never tried those.  With the power trainer you can work on your steps repeatedly with something that swings naturally and is approximately the same size as your ball.  You can get that float feeling with it also.
Here today.  Gone tomorrow.

Thanks for the drill idea and the tool idea! I'll be trying that drill out when I bowl next.

I'm one of those right handed cranker/tweener guys that shoots the 4/7 spare hooking across the lane throwing straight up between 1/2 arrow about 90% of my usual speed.  I never miss it.  I'm always relaxed and my confidence is high and my timing and release is always perfect.  Making that spare is like an afterthought or muscle memory.  I can probably do it eyes closed.

When my game or timing goes south I practice that spare shot about 10-15 times in a row.  When I'm relaxed and comfortable again with my timing I move back left for my normal shot.
