Too Much Stuff
« on: September 30, 2013, 08:49:02 PM »
anyone else feel like lately there has been so many good balls and even new(er) companies making a big contribution to the game today? I want to try so many different balls but then I come back to reality and realize I'm a poor college student. Lol

I feel the same way.  Its hard to believe that all these companies are able to stay in buisness with all these balls on the market today. I don't care what they say about new technology, these balls are no different then the ones i threw 5 years ago. All it is nowadays is who can come up with the coolest name or color on a ball. Im not going to lie i usally buy 1or 2 new balls a year. Do i really need them, No but im also a sucker for a cool name or color if it fits my need. I mean how many balls does one person really need. Maybe 4 or 5 at the most if your a tournament player. If you bowl league at the same houses every year you know what to expect, so maybe 2 to 3 balls at the most there. So thats 3 to 5 balls per person and thats stretching it. Its just hard for me to believe that all these companies are selling that many balls to stay afloat  especially when most balls cost 200.00 out the door drilled.

Yes there is. You find subtle differences in some cases. Other wise you realize not really much of a difference like you would expect.

I love seeing the new stuff from Seismic, Radical, and Lord Field/Lane Masters. Track has really caught my eye with what they are offering now

Entry level to medium level equipment works fine on most house shots correct surface and layout for your specs....should allow a bowler to purchase a new ball every few years in the low $90 to $120 range before drilling when comparing pricing.  For most house bowlers a 2 years investment of that kind of money plus drilling shouldn't be a big deal when bowling once a week 25 to 30some weeks.

Folks get carried away with the new stuff but like almost all say it's just the new thing not that it's any better.  I think the majority of the new stuff is way too strong for most average players.  Also why I not interested in the majority of it.

Of the companies mentioned LM/LF no interest.  Seismic no interest.  Radical maybe a Torrid Affair for house and a Reax for heavy mostly tourney's.  Track 300 C Solid and 400A for house.  The rest others can covet just not my thing.

FWIW for house shots and a medium Sr. Scratch pattern, I take a Thrash Frenzy 4.25" pin over ring most total hook I need medium, Tribal (new ball this year low medium level price) 5" pin under bridge for fresh light-medium, Ascent Pearl 2" pin light.  I rarely see any need for much more than this on any house or medium condition.  The rest of my stuff is from last year or previous years.

It's a little more different for me, 6-7 months ago I was a bowler with ball speed around 14.5-15 mph and rev rate around 250-275 so most of my equipment was layed out to have a little more length. Now that I've been bowling 3+ times a week for a few months my ball speed is up to 16.5-17 and revs up to 300-325 area and have had trouble slowing my ball speed down under 16 on oil. Most of my equipment is years old so it's pretty much time to start replacing balls, I've changed surfaces some but it's only helped so much

I'm not sure exactly, it's been on AMF systems though. If I had to guess, I would say at the back.

For me its less an urge to have new stuff and more of an urge to try older things. For instance there are a ton of balls I looked at and wanted to try in the late 90's that I just couldn't afford but still would love to throw one ( some of the old EBI animal series, love to try an old 3D offset, Cudas, etc.). They are harder to come by and generally fairly expensive sometimes but I'm starting to save up.

Other than that I dont bowl leagues anymore, so I don't need much, but if I catch something pretty cheap thats on closeout I'll do that too. I'm not giving $150 for a ball again though, unless its some rare just too awesome to give up classic.

Every time a new ball comes out..."it hooks 5 boards more", "Its more angular".... If all this is true you would have to be bowling on lane 18 to hit the pocket on 17. There is only so much any ball can do. The Brunswick Inferno was considered one of the best balls of all time.... has any of the new balls since then really out hook or out that ball? The ball companies keep making "newer and better" balls for one reason..... so they stay in business. Im guilty of buying the new balls. My best older ball was the Hammer Vicious Strike, My best newer ball is the DV8 Nightmare Terror and now I'm liking the Wrecker.

This issue has always come up a lot on here, and the results are always similar. If you are strictly a league bowler, you can probably get away with one or two entry-level to mid-price balls to cover all of your needs. There is a fantastic market at that price point these days. You really don't need the higher end stuff in most cases because the patterns won't have enough oil to really make them worthwhile anyhow.

Now, if you're a tournament bowler, it makes sense to have an "arsenal" of some sort because it will allow you flexibility for the different patterns you may face. The size of that arsenal is up for debate. Some people will say you need 3-4 balls, and some people will say you need 7, 8, 9, etc. I remember a feature story on Diandra Asbaty back in the day that said she routinely traveled to tournaments with more than 40 balls in the back of her SUV. She just said she just never knew whether there would be a need for a particular ball until she got there, so she always wanted to be able to grab it if she needed it. Really, it's up to the bowler. As long as you don't mind lugging the stuff in and out of the car, bring however many makes you happy.

As good a reason as any to buy a new ball. I have not bought a new ball in several years, so I am due for something new. Purchasing and using a new ball is something that makes you look forward to bowling, so that is good for the sport.

I am looking at a medium / light oil ball like Shatter or Lights Out.
