Seriously, who put the voodoo whammy on me?
« on: October 26, 2007, 05:46:24 AM »
[emotional breakdown]

So,uhmmm, a few weeks ago I was coasting along with a 207 avg. I think it was
then that a dark cloud appeared over me, a pin was stuck in a voodoo doll,
a fubar curse was employed... sompin' happn 2 me.

Three weeks later, I'm at 189 average in league (let that sink in - that is a huge drop in average).
My scores have fallen off a cliff, exponential decline, incomprehensible ball
reactions, physics defying chops and splits, just some darned confusing things
going on for my bowling (plus frustration making it worse).

A typical game for me right now, 4 strikes in a row, pocket 7-10, spare, strike, chop 6 off of 10 pin, strike, split....

choping a 6 off a 10? from across the lane? with a spare ball, 6 pin and ball going behind the 10 pin - WTF?

I've become handicap pins person on my team.... ugh!

Anybody else gone completely OFF the scoring cliff recently?

More strangeness, I feel like I am bowling better than I ever have. I am
hitting my marks and doing what I think is correct at the time, but apparently
I just suck at good bowling. I was scoring better with chuck it bowling.

[/emotional breakdown]

Ah well, just slumping I guess. Let it go...let it go..... bowl thru it, eh?

You're not alone. I was booked in at just over 200 and have struggled to get out of the 180s this fall. I have pondered the cause quite a bit. I got a SuperNova drilled with a longer span. Had many corrections made to my equipment by Palmer Fallgren.

The problem is, the ball fit so well, that my older equipment was causing more discomfort than it had in the past. So I stuck with the SuperNova on lanes with less oil than had normally been laid out in the past. I couldn't keep the ball right of the head pin, and to make matters worse, I spent the last two summers and last fall working on getting away from swinging the lanes when I should have learned down-and-in at the same time as a toolkit addition, not a hostile takeover of styles...

The best night was when I had all of my other balls in the shop getting plugged to be drilled up just like the Nova. I had no plastic. Luckily I had only one 10 pin, which I missed, and a few 6-10's that I was able to convert by flattening out the shot. I shot 225, 200 (4-9 split in the 10th) and a 222. Was my best night in I can't remember. It was my most consistent night in a while too. I should mention also that they had put out more oil that night, and after talking to the lane guy who bowls in the same league, he said they were trying to let the shot hold up longer by putting more volume.

I'm starting to get used to the new drilling. My thumb isn't getting torn up. I figure I have to crawl before I walk again, much like a person rehabilitating themselves from a severe accident. I have just accepted the reality of it and set new goals. Goals I thought I had already met before. If you don't put yourself in that mindset, you will have a hard time climbing back to the top.

I feel your pain. Same thing happened to me. My job has kept me so busy that those evening walks with my wife have been replaced with nap time. My strength training (push ups) have all but stopped. My mental game is a joke. The suggestions above about weaker or plastic balls are true. Worked before and should work again. Usually when this happens I come back better than before. Hope is a good thing.

I have been in a funk for 4 years now its gotten to the point I am thinking about quitting all together

In practice I do everything right and when league starts I cant seem to carry anything. Just can not figure this out anymore even when I was bowling in an amateur bowling tournament called strike force here I bowl great but in league only I suck,so I am to the point of quitting

From 234 in one league now down to 226 also was 229 in another league at a different house and I shot a 530 on thursday night there. Let the team down really bad. Sad part is after league was over I said I aint leaving til I throw the ball good and then guess what 17 strikes in a row. They thought I was paid off to roll that bad.

I'm glad that I found this thread because I'm in a slump.  I started off with a 208 average at the beginning of my league.  Now I'm probably below 190 (just shot a 476 series this past Wednesday  )  I don't go in on league night with a negative attitude.  I just get really frustrated when my shot goes away and I encounter so much over reaction off the breakpoint.  I'm reading some of the posts and I may just need to bring a ball or 2 with weaker layouts, or just bowl with a plastic ball.  I definitely need some practice because my mental game is off and I need to find a way to overcome shifting lane conditions.  I've got good teammates to cheer me up, so that helps.

I dont know what the deal is either.

There arent many in my area at or above last season's average.
I chopped a cross lane plastic 4-7 last night too, for a 266 instead of a 279 in practice after a putrid league shot, not oiled in 24 hours.
I'll give you 100 shots to chop it again, and I bet you couldnt.

This year is awful for a lot of people, I took it out on the lane man last night, and told him to get his act together, the shot has been drastically different every week.

It makes me want to puke.

I'm down but so what?

Maybe proprietors have finally realized they need as a whole to make the lane condition a bit of a test rather than give the wall they used to put out or many still do.

I like the challenge and know I'll get better.

Okay, went back to basics last night with weaker ball. Only one open all
night (almost picked up big four too!).

Shot three game 681 series.

Hopefully, my slump is coming to an end.

Maybe admitting we had a problem was the step we needed to correct our bad karma ...
After 3 sub-par weeks, I finally feel like I am coming back into decent form today, posting a 193-224-214 (631). I still have room for improvement, but this is a lot better than the 550-570's I've been putting up lately.
Hopefully everyone else who posted here is having (or will soon have) the same sort of positive turnaround.
