Shrinking thumb hole?
« on: June 03, 2019, 04:13:07 AM »
Had a weird occurence recently, and I just want to check if someone else experienced this? I have a DV8 Hellraiser which I do not play a lot because it's very aggressive and strong. However, when I recently took it to training I encountered serious issues with the thumb hole (ball has a clear thumb slug) - it felt uncomfortably tight, even as if the span had been reduced? It just became workable after I took out any tape, but it still felt strange and I did not get out properly upon release.

I took the ball to my trusted pro shop and we had the ball re-measured: and the thumb hole had actually shrunk! Well, I know that balls shrink through the loss of softener from cover and filler, but that the thumb hole can be affected this way...?

However, the thumb hole position was still fine, and after re-drilling the hole to the correct diameter, everything feels well again. But what a strange occurence? Anyone else ever had such an issue?

Did you notice that other ball on the return that looked "just like yours"?  ;D

No, not really. It's the only Hellraiser around in the region.

I had a ball that I drilled and was copying for a customer.  I don't remember why, but I tried to insert the bit I used to drill the thumb hole and it wouldn't go all the way in, it went in about 1/4 of the way and jammed.  I called the manufacturer's technical rep. and he said the resin had probably finished curing and expanded slightly, he asked me to ship him the ball, which was replaced.  I never heard back and he left the company shortly afterwards.  --  JohnP
