Site changes running people from BR?
« on: February 27, 2011, 11:57:48 PM »
First, don't tell me this is in the wrong forum, this is the one people read.

Has anyone else noticed the reduction in number of posts since the changes to the site?  The ads and videos that come up every time you view a new post are slowing the site to a crawl, and I have AT&T's mid speed internet.  I know I don't visit as often as I used to because of this.  The other factor is the increase in volume at bowlingchat.net, which is a very quick and easy site to navigate.  Much of that increase is coming from folks that used to post here.  I hope this will be taken as constructive criticism and that the powers that be will see and make some changes.  --  JohnP

John, I just said I disagree with you, that is all, just a different point of view.

But when that guy from that other forum keeps coming over here and peddling his site I have a problem with that, it doesn't past the smell test, poor corrector if you ask me. And this is not the first time he has been here doing that.

For those that have taken offense at my mention of bowlingchat, OK - I made a mistake.  I won't do it again.

I have been an active member here since 2003, and I like to think I've helped quite a few people.  I plan to continue.  I mentioned the reduction in posts in recent months and a possible cause for that reduction.  Yes, I'm old and sometimes resist change.  I think if the videos didn't start up automatically but required a click to start for those that want to watch them the navigation would be quicker.  I want to help the site, not hurt it.  --  JohnP

We really don't mind them advertising their site here.  We find it flattering that they use our site to advertise theirs.

It just proves that BR is "the" place to be.

We do, however, agree with the assessment that if you are going to pimp your site, you probably shouldn't bash this one at the same time.  Just seems like bad business.  We will let the users decide on that one.

You can bet that we would NEVER bad mouth another site.

I post to give members on here an opportunity to get access to resources BR does not offer.

There will always be someone looking to take their game to the next level, and we have the people to get you there.

That is all.

If you're referring to me, I have nothing to do with the site other than being a contributor, just as I am on BR.  And I hope I made it clear that I'm not bashing BR, just hoping for improvement.  --  JohnP

This is the problem with bowling...instead of working together to increase awareness and thus everyone winning...we decide to trash each other, creating boundaries and unnecessary wars and sides being chosen.

This has always been the issue in bowling...too many egos and not enough team work. There are too many out there that are more concerned with the attention they are going to get than actually bettering the whole.

Ever hear of getting more with honey or however that goes....

Ric, you are dead on with what you said.. I agree with you 100%. It couldn't have been said better. Those are the things that have also driven people from the BR site to other sites.

Brick

I have unfortunately seen this WAY too long in our industry...it goes back to when Brunswick & AMF were the largest in terms of bowling center chains and they did everything to trash each other.

There are too many organizations involved in bowling that do more to tear it down than build it up and for the most part it starts at the top...with ego. It happens with the ball companies as well. I understand that it is a dog eat dog world but combined we can do so much more...too many chiefs and not enough indians....

I like the "newness" of the site now, but it definitely runs slower for me than the old one did, and I use mid-range DSL.  Scrolling is jerky most of the time, and when clicking on something there is a lag that wasn't there before.  I don't see these issues at other sites I regularly visit, so it's related to the new version of BallReviews.  Still visit here pretty much the same amount, but it is a bit more frustrating.

Are you sure it is not your computer? Because I have the mid range DSL and I have no issues at all, no jerkiness at all.

I currently like the new look and changes of the site at this time.

My only suggestion would be that the videos not load and start playing on every page. That they show up and you have to click on them to start play. That way if you open a couple different windows you don't have to spend your time searching for the vids to click pause or stop on all of them.

Best thing I can say about issues with the site and trying to diagnose them is to use a browser like Firefox.

You can watch the bottom left-hand corner and see exactly what is going on.  I can't count the number of times I've watched it constantly transfer data to tremormedia.com, neulion.com, xtraframe.tv, and even google-analytics.com.

I guess it could be the network- we only have a 200MB connection at work, and a I only have a 25MB connection at home.

Could be my computers - my desktop at work and home are both about 4 years old.  Didn't know I would need more than a 3ghz processor and 2Gb of RAM to browse the internet.   Of course I run into the same issues using my laptop with a Core2 Duo processor and 4Gb of RAM.   ???

I've been a member here since 2004.  As long as I can remember, there has always been complaints about this site - too many kids, lack of moderation, takes too long to get new balls added for reviews, lack of a search feature, no way to give feedback ratings for buyers and sellers, etc.   It looks like the site update was done to address most (if not all) of those complaints.

As far as the BR vs BC deal, that is funny.  Both sites are completely different, and offer different things in terms of information and formats.   That site was created to help address some of the issues that many BR users were complaining about.  If it comes across as being "stuffy," "elitist," or for more "serious" or "technical" bowlers, then so be it.  Nothing wrong with having 2 different places to have discussions.

There is a use and purpose for both sites.   The internet is a big place, I'm fairly certain there is room for both!

The first two really bother me.  I haven't bookmarked "my info" so why does it always take me there?

I don't post much, but check out the site pretty much daily.  I like the look of the new site, but here are my only complaints:

1.  Click on my shortcut and the first page is a "My Info" page which requires another click to get to the home page.  Kinda annoying, though it is only one more click.

2.  TONS OF SCROLLING.  I feel like I have to scroll forever to view the intended information.  It isn't always advertising related, just the format of stuff like ball reviews has a lot of dead space.

3.  Click on a forum topic and if it has more than 1 page, I never know which page it will take me too.  If I don't catch it, I get confused on some of the replies, then realize I was started on page 3 of 5.

4.  More ball reviews recently that provide nothing in terms of information.  Supposed "staffers" who do not provide the information needed to make a ball purchase.  Not to say what one person says will sway me one way or another, but I still would like to take information from this site and have it mean something.

All-in-all, I have loved the website for many years.  But I can understand why some may not visit or participate as much.

I am not a pro-bowler, but I do play one on BallReviews.com

This is exactly what I'm experiencing, you described it a lot better.  In addition, just in the last few days I've started getting a message, "To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has blocked this website from displaying content with security certificate errors."  It comes up every time I change topics, with an annoying beep.  I could possibly figure out a way to get rid of the message and the beep, but it's not worth the time - just very annoying.  --  JohnP

The ads are kind of annoying but, most sites have those now. The only complaint I have is I wish they would seperate the selling of balls and forum topics. I hate them lumped all together.
