League Hijinx
« on: August 05, 2017, 10:10:30 AM »
There is a senior league at our local bowling center.  Up until last season, teams were randomly assigned [you couldn't pick who was on your team.]  The rules were changed last season to allow bowlers to pick their own teams.

A team formed of years long friends who enjoy bowling together.  Keep in mind this is a senior, unsanctioned, handicap league.  The team of friends ended up winning the league (and the $12 bonus...literally $12), but it was not a blowout.  They didn't make the finals until the 2nd half of the league, and even then it was close.  The team of friends was regularly giving the other teams 200+ pins per week in handicap and their team average was only around 700 (4 person team.)

With leagues forming for the fall, bowlers on the league approached the bowling center and complained that the team of friends was stacked and should no longer be permitted to bowl in the league.  The team of friends broke no rules,  attended every week, and remained in good standing.  They are bowling together because they are years long friends and just want to have fun for a couple of hours each week.  Still, the other people on the league did not want them back.

The bowling center reviewed the week by week results of the league and determined that the team of friends, while their averages were higher than the other teams, had no distinct advantage based on wins and losses.  It wasn't a blowout by any means, so there are no grounds for not allowing the team to continue.  Instead, the handicap will be raised from 90% to 100% for the upcoming season to appease the other bowlers.

So we have an unsanctioned, handicap senior league that was trying to kick off a team that they felt had an unfair advantage.  It is amazing that this type of thing would happen in this type of league.  They don't care enough to sanction, and could form any team they want to, yet their solution was to try and disband another team.  You would think people in their 70's and 80's would just be happy they have the ability to still be bowling each week, and not really care about such frivolous issues.

People can bitch about anything. One of our senior leagues complained that the couple of people with a 200-210 average gave their team a huge advantage with handicap at 100% of 220. So they voted for 100% of 250 to make them feel better

That's hilarious!  It's amazing how many bowlers don't understand the math of handicaps.  --  JohnP

Bowlers are some of the biggest bunch of whiners there is. Whenever someone loses, it's always the other guys fault.

If they do throw that team off, what are they planning to do when the next team wins. Throw them off next year for being too good too.

They don't have to throw the team off the league, just vote to go back to the random assigning of players to teams they used before (aka: the kindergarten method) at the league meeting.
