Had a callous on the back of my thumb and bought a thumb straight, it worked great. But then I found a driller that drilled up my equipment so I no longer need one.

But it does work, the best thing to do is find a driller to fit you properly so it will not cause a callous.

Callous on side of thumb sounds like a little lateral adjustment in your thumb pitch might be in order.  Typically adjust with the problem, I use to split open left side of my thumb, I am left handed and went with some left lateral thumb pitch and thumb looks great.

You may need to work out your thumb hole a bit.  Usually the problem is on the opposite side away from the injury.  Start out with a little screen and work on it until it evens out.  Another cause sometimes is the hole being to big.  Take the ball to a good proshop with someone that really knows thumbs.  Many places do not.
