So much for “Going out in style”.
« on: October 03, 2018, 11:38:45 AM »
I turned 58 this August, and thought that I would go ahead and bowl one more season, just taking it easy and having fun. Not getting too serious, or too involved, then maybe just quietly retire from the game.

 So, what have I done?

 1. Bought a brand new, two ball KR roller bag with an extra joey attached.
 2. Picked up a N.I.B. Black Quantum
 3. Bought a new pair of Hammer Force White Carbon shoes in size 10W.
 4. Had my old urethane ball re-gripped for use at spares and on dry track conditions.
 5. Had my Hyroad re-gripped for fit.
 6. Had my Wreck-Em surfaced, cleaned, and new inserts installed.
 7. Just picked up a N.I.B. Radical Intel Pearl.

So much for me throwing nothing but urethane this season.  :o  ::)
Doesn’t sound like I’ll be leaving anytime soon.  ;D
Man, this stuff is addictive, and I’m thinking I’m too hooked to EVER give it up.  ;)  :)

LETS GO BOWLING!!!!!!

Yeah, we've all been there.

I'm turning 57 soon and work 50 hours a week in a bowling center, so burnout happens.

Last week I spent an hour with a very respected coach in the industry and now I'm excited again.  Tiny flaws added together had me at the "pissed off" stage when things felt mostly okay, but not quite right...   Now I have some real things that make me want to practice again.

Ever since my wife quit running a center (2011) my interest has been slowly going down. Only bowled partially last year (injuries were a part of it), but I haven't even picked up a ball this year. Maybe it's the age thing....57....... :)

57?  ::) Is that all? Geesh! Feeling like the sidewalk is rolling up on you old timer? I've got you by almost 20 years and bowling still feels great. But I can somewhat understand your dilemma. It's a mind trip and to some, age can be so depressing.  :o ;D Just funnin' with you, not too serious here.  ;)

Haha....It's all good. When my wife ran a center I was bowling 4 to 5 nights a week and ballreviews was literally my home page. Funny how time changes things.

You've met some pretty shady characters in a center, brother. Probably better that you're out lol.

"Seasoned"!! Never thought of it that way. I like that description.  ;D Also, what goes around, comes around. A sabbatical might just be the right thing to do.  :-\

I turned 61 in July and seriously thought about quitting during the summer. I suffered a wrist injury last October and bowled the rest of the year in pain and with a big loss of strength in it. During that time I made adjustments to get by with the discomfort. Those adjustments changed my game to a point I'm having trouble getting back to where I was before the injury. I'm struggling to stay above 180 in average and would cash it in if it wouldn't leave my team short. It would, so I can't. I used to live, eat and breath bowling. I had a career change 3 years ago and my job is very challenging which also moves bowling farther back in my life. I wish every week the old me would show up and get the fire burning again, but it doesn't look like it will happen. I still love the game but just can't show up every week and just throw the ball. All this makes me understand why someone has such a hard time quitting.

 Yes, exactly.

I used to eat, sleep, and practically live, bowling.  If I wasn’t doing it, I was thinking about doing it, and planning my next outing. Back in the day (the late 1990’s), I even toyed with going pro. I was at the top of my game, averaged about 220 (with urethane), and was kicking butts. Then, my life changed.

My “career” changed, and I had to completely stop bowling for three years. When I got to come back, resin had basically taken over. I had, in the interim, become the analog man in a digital world type character. Life had kicked my feet out from under me, then totally changed when I wasn’t looking, lol.

20 something years later, I still love bowling, but I ain’t who I once was, and finally had to admit that “my” heyday had come and gone. Once I was able to do that, I was able to just bowl with my friends, enjoy it for what it is, not rotate my life totally around bowling, and be as happy as possible.

It has been a frustrating trip at times, but it has been worth it, at least to me. With my job changes, I’ve had to change bowling centers, and now, I drive 150 miles round trip to bowl in my league, because I have to bowl on either Friday or Saturday night, and the only league I could find at the time was in Dallas, Tx, 75 miles away.

Good luck my compadre, and don’t give up. I often think I might, but really know that I dread the day I have to. It has been a part of me for so long, I think I would be lost without it.

Wow!  Driving 150 miles round trip to bowl in a weekly league!!!!  Talk about love and passion for the game.  Brother you have it.
Hats off to you, I don't think I could do what you are doing and I pride myself on loving the game so much, that I bowl in three leagues per week, plus monthly tournaments as a senior citizen.
The next time I'm down and have any thoughts of retiring from the game, I'm going to remind myself of your devotion and I'm sure it will help keep me going forward.
