I have always said that you cant develop a good armswing without a good fit (pitch and size) in the thumbhole nor can you use a good fitting thumhole without a good armswing. So which comes first??
Well I have quit this sport many times, 10 seasons one time, 2 seasons another and a couple 1 seasons. I have average as high as 240 and as low as 213 with a broken thumb and still bowled (having to change my grip to hold onto the ball). But being 47 now and trying to come back this year after 2 years has been ridiculously difficult. And I am now facing the problem of trying to relax my armswing and not muscle it but still get out of the thumbhole consistantly. I am almost splitting my target now on 90% of my shots, hitting my break point within 3 boards and I have brought my average up to 216 and 220 from starting the league at 191 for the first three weeks. In fact I did not even shoot any 700's the first half of the year.
Now I am at the point that my rev rate, ball speed and axis tilt/rotation, i.e. release is inconsistant and I can't put 6 shots together in a row. I have had many 258's, 269's (2 release errors) and a couple 279's with one release error.
So, which should I focus on, my armswing or thumbhole?? I have tried the thumbhole a drilled the "correct" pitches but could not get out of it. And now I have tried the armswing and as it gets better I loose the ball. Any suggestions?
