Integrity of Bowling Balls
« on: July 11, 2003, 08:25:42 PM »
Can anyone tell me why a ball would develop a crack the entire circumference of the ball when it is just sitting on a bedroom floor?  I have had 3 balls develop a crack around the entire ball and another ball have the bridge crack out just from sitting on my bedroom floor.  Now, I have heard of balls cracking because of severe temperature differences due to keeping them in the trunk of your car, truck, SUV.  But, never heard of someone warn me about balls going out of commission from sitting on bedroom, living room, or dining room floors.  Before you members speculate, the house I live in is kept at 72 degrees in the summer and 68 in the winter time.  The balls are not thrown around, dropped, or abused in any way.  All rooms are carpeted.  The 3 balls I have had do that, are the Triton Heat, Columbia Scout/R, and the original Ebonite Trimax.  The bridge cracked out of a Wine Tour Boss.  Has anyone else had the same problem?  Also.....what can be done to prevent this in the future?

Although the temperature was kept at a relative warmth throughout the year, do the balls receive direct sunlight through the windows at any point of the day??

Rock,

Actually, no.  A couple were inside my closet and one was right next to the bed, but on the other side from where the window is.  This seems strange to me that a ball does this.  What makes it funnier, yet, is that for the most part, I do keep my equipment in the trunk at least 300 days a year if not more, and NEVER had a ball crack out or split from that.  I do live in a place where we do get wind chills below 0 and heat indexes of 100+ in the summer.  Go figure.

The closest I have come to this happening is with a ball that was retired after cracking on the lanes.  My original Ebonite Timberwolf came back in the ball return once with a crack about 1/3 of the way around it.  This ball had been a consistent winner for me for a long time and I was devastated.  I retired it to my basement--stored in it's box and off the floor.  The basement is a very consistent temperature all year round in the 60s.  The last time I looked at the ball, the crack had worked it's way all the way around the ball.

I was surprised, but I can see that as being a far more likely occurence than for a healthy ball to just spontaneously crack when it is doing nothing but sitting around in a stable environment.

I read your profile, Revs too high, You need to have a rev limiter on your equipment. (Just kidding)

I have couple of balls that cracked in just the same manner. The best explanation I have heard is, as the balls age the coverstock cures out and shrinks while the weight block doesn't.

I've never used any heat based oil extraction technique, nor do I allow any of my bowling balls to stay in the car exposed to extreme heat or cold.  In spite of the extra work, I haul them in and out with me as needed.  If I have to go to bowling directly from work, my bowling equipment comes into work with me in the morning and gets put back in the car just before I leave.  I have a freight elevator right next to where I park.

Do you have a forced air furnace and air comditioning with floor vents and if so, is it possible the balls were sitting to close to the vents?

Hi guys,I have been reading this site as a guest for couple of weeks over here in the U.K.and find it very good, and have just registered as a member today. This topic is what prompted me,I run the leagues in my local centre and about 6 months ago a lady bowler bought a new ball used it for 3 games in her league and a crack started at the ring finger hole and went half way round the ball, she took it back to the Proshop who (after some discussion)drilled her a new one.She decided to have a practice with this ball, after 2 games the EXCACT same problem occured, the Proshop owner told her it was probably caused because she rolled the ball over the finger holes. The cracks were wide enough to slide a knife blade in.Any thoughts anyone.
Keep up the great work on ball reviews,we have nothing like it over here.

I had a Danger Zone that I used for a couple of months, put it in the locker at the center, and when I next went to use it after the summer off, it was cracked all the way around the ball.  The center was open for the summer so it was somewhat temperature controlled, and that was before I started cleaning the balls in hot water.  Brunswick replaced the ball with no problems.

I had another ball, the Omega LM, that I used extensively one season, put it in my closet, and when I pulled it out for the next season, it had cracked all the way round the ball.  It was sitting in my bowling bag so I did not notice the crack until I removed it at the center.

I would also be curious to find out why this happens only to some balls.

I do not use any heating methods to clean my equipment.  I put my balls on a spinner every week or so and use Storm Products for cleaning and polishing.  I thought that one response pertaining to the covers curing over time and the ball shrinking was interesting.  Never really thought of a ball shrinking.  As for the response about my revs, I get it from what my username entails.  I am a no thumber and use both hands.  I found out years ago that 2 handing the ball was legal after watching someone else do it.  So, I started doing it and never went back to using a thumb.  Thank you for all the responses.
