"DRY" lanes?
« on: June 05, 2017, 08:18:31 AM »
More and more, I see people reviewing urethane balls, and somewhere in the review, there is some version of the "it will be a great ball on dry lanes" spiel.

So, I want to know, just what the heck does "dry lanes" mean anymore?

For me if you are in lofting the gutters it's dry. Urethane hooks early and isn't an option when the heads are gone.

It's different for ever. Most its too dry when they can't play between 2nd and 3rd arrow.

There are several urethane formulations out there as new, and some of them are not the true old fashioned urethane, like the Pitch Black that virtually hooks at your feet (why they made the stock cover 1000 grit, I'll never know).

Some are like the new Blue Hammer, which is a true dry lanes ball, but I suspect it is truly a resin/urethane blend. Even for someone rev dominant like me, at 4000 grit, I have found the BH often gets too much length even when playing an outside line.

The new Black Hammer and the new Purple Pearl Hammer do seem to be old fashioned true urethane.

When I can't get my Desert Hook to get past the arrows from the first to seventh arrow, it's dry. I don't use plastic and urethane isn't an option when the heads are gone.

Once in awhile, especially during summer time, if playing inside is no longer an option I tend to move outside with "plastic". Balls I had success with were the clear balls I've thrown and XXXL Lane 1. The clear tire and the the XXXL were used most times during one summer league (diff years) when the house had a messed up summit...

First, all house shots are dry if you get far enough outside.  A lot of guys consider lanes dry if they can't or won't move in to the center oil.  Other guys consider lanes dry if they are very rev dominant with slow ball speed.  Modern balls do blow up patterns quickly forcing bielers to chase the oil in sooner and further than was the case many years ago.  Also surfaces are generally getting More worn.

To me dry lanes are when there is a lack of oil in the heads making them really tough to play such as you often find in open play. Think a lot of the time we say dry but its more the lanes where we like to play are drier than we would like and as said by previous posters lanes do often become much drier as we bowl with our oil eaters.

Dry to me is when I used my urethane and low oilers and the only thing that works is my PLASTIC ball. Old man once told me : straighter is greater.
