Span Measurements
« on: November 02, 2003, 05:19:33 PM »
I've noticed recently that there have been several people when talking about changing their spans, mention their middle finger being longer than their ring finger. I was always under the impression that the ring finger measurement was at least the same or longer than the middle finger. Is there a reason they have the middle finger longer than the ringfinger?

I happen to be one of those guys whose ring finger is actually Longer than the "medical finger".  This is only on my right hand, my left hand is "normal".  I got this way due to an injury which required the ring finger to be pulled out of a severe joint dislocation.  I know of people who are chronic dislocators of the joints.

I throw a full roller, which I suspect is because I have the longer ring finger and it prevents me from turning the ball with the same revs as the cranker.  Anyone else have a thought?  I have a moderate average range of 196 to 206 during the past 5 seasons, though this year I am down 10 pins across the board.

Got a new ball - Hammer Sling Blade - It's a real Killer, I am very happy with the reaction I get when I miss it to the right.  It comes back, may not strike but I definitely get way more 9's than buckets!

Brick Guy,

These guys are crankers and they are trying the Sarge Easter grip to try to cut down on lift and revs.

Not something for you or I!

By the way I've posted something on Drilling about what the difference is between middle and ring finger spans by way of Bill Taylor.

Some people could have a longer middle finger drilling.  Those with a middle finger at least 3/8 of an inch longer than their ring finger when laid on the ball.  Otherwise most people do have the ring longer and anatomy is the factor.

5/16 inch longer middle means same span and each 1/16 less difference shortens middle finger span more.

(as in CLT or my similar layouts)

John, I know what CLT layouts are, and tried one a few months ago when there was a lot of talk on this site about it and also a pictorial guide on how to do it. For whatever reason. laying the ball out exactly like the pictoral guide said to do it didn't work well for me. It did put a wee bit more but not enough of of my hand against the ball. Also, it seemed to kill my ball causing it to "hit like a marshmellow." Do you have any idea why it might not have worked for me? It did feel more comfortable, but that is about all I can say about it.

Could you be more specific on what you mean on "my similiar layouts?" I do have, a huge gap between part of my hand and the ball and wish I had more of my hand on the ball as I don't seem to "have a good feel like it is." The only place the palm of my hand touches the ball, is a small spot directly below the index finger. On my span, my ring finger is 1/8" longer than  the index finger. If you need more information, I could Message you.
