league and the "2009 usbc pattern"
« on: February 24, 2009, 04:32:09 AM »
well i had league monday night and they laid out the new usbc pattern to be bowled on...not 100% sure but i think the lanes are hpl's so a little softer lane surface and also not entirely new. (remember this is just a review of how i bowled and how the shot played at this house, but it gives some idea)

anyways, practiced tried using my bounty at 1000, haha no chance! way to much hook, so i threw my awakening and was able to use that standing 18, targeting 12 at the arrows and 6 at the break point...244 out the gate...

then the lanes started transitioning, the left lane started hooking and made it easy to strike on, the right lane on the other hand, good shot 2/8, then wash out, move 2 right wash out again...fill the tenth with the bounty 9/x for 169...OOOPS!

stay with the awakening on the left and bounty on the right, threw it through the face one time on the right lane with the bounty and shot 216 the 3rd game...

awakening is drilled pin above fingers cg slightly kicked OOB
bounty is pin in the middle finger and cg in the ring finger with the mb bout 2 and 1/2 3 inchs right of thumb 1000.

pattern seemed to be a little softer with much more hook than last year, but then again last year i was no good at targeting anything outside of 8 board...so ya...

Good report. Anytime I've bowled on any version of the Nationals pattern, I have to tilt a strong ball to have any success. Weaker stuff doesn't finish and stronger stuff wants to read too early. If my wrist is hurting that week, I'm screwed, because I have to go to a wrist brace and can't tilt the ball when I'm wearing a wrist brace.

i was definitely not expecting to use the awakening, i am just glad it was in the bag...i figured bounty or break, then i had a vapor zone and black widow solid all except the bounty were too flippy, the bounty was so strong at the beginning but the awakening was just skid hook roll...perfect

Any pattern on HPL's will hook more than the same pattern on Pro Anvilane's.  Expect less reaction on the back to start with in Vegas.  If the pattern is broken down correctly as a team you may get a strong reaction with less aggressive coverstocks.  Don't assume a lot of hook just because your house hooks.

i threw on it tonight also, but we have old wood lanes, so it's completely different.  But, i thought it was really scoreable, as long as you were accurate and made your spares when you don't strike.  I started out using my NVS, standing 13 left and keeping it really tight, i'm not comfortable with that shot at all, and i shot 162, then i went and grabbed my old X-factor Ace, drilled RICO, dulled to 360 and put a little shine on it with Snake Oil.  That i think is the magic ball for that condition.  I could stand 5 left of center and get it out to 5 board and watch it walk right back into the pocket.  I ended up shooting 188 230 190 for my last three games, so i'm pleased about that.  The only thing that sucks is that my Ace has no label or serial number on it anymore, so i wouldnt be able to take it if i was actually going this year

Did they mention the change in oil pattern in advance?  I'm sure it was nice for people who like a challenge or might be going to nationals, but it would be a huge shock for a typical league bowler expecting a nice THS and get a sport compliant pattern instead.  Usually people complain about minor changes.  A completely different pattern 3/4 the way through the season is completely different.  Was it a one week shot, or are they running it for a while to give people a chance to get used to it?

I think you better be careful reading too much into this. Everything i have heard coming out of Vegas is that this year is even slicker then last year. Pretty much polar opposite  of what you say your are seeing.

A couple years ago at a brand new center that had pro-anvilane same as the tournament they got the pattern for USBC, downloaded it, and ran it on the lanes.

Long story short, it played much easier than the tournament condition.

I don’t know if the lane machine wasn’t programmed right, if there was enough memory from the house shot on the lane, if we were just relaxed in our home house and letting it fly, but the shot played much tighter at nationals and the outside was much more out of play (OB).

It doesn’t hurt to practice on it but don’t count too much on the shot playing the same.

+1

Plus remember, even if your house has the same lane type, are they using the same oil? Are they stripping the lanes prior to applying the USBC shot? And you cannot simulate the actual conditions, since your bowling center is no where near as expansive as the Cashman Center. All plays into ball reaction and how the lanes breakdown.

guys trust me i understand all of this, i guess i shouldve put a disclaimer in my first post. i never really read to much into these things because its always different when you are out there. Ask the pros, the lanes are always different from the practice session to the competition. I just wanted to give some people an idea of what i saw. HPL and PROLANE are somewhat close as prolane gets softer as you go down the lane. so they tend to hook more.

if the lanes out in vegas are slicker than last year, fine...that works for me. but for our league (its a pba x league so it wasnt just a OOOO HEY were putting this out tonight to try) this is what worked and i figured i would report back...ill probably give a report each week just to see how it changes...
