split thumb
« on: August 31, 2003, 09:34:10 AM »
Hey everyone, I'm new here and have a question for some of you guys and gals. I have been bowling for about a year and a half now and lately have been having problems with my thumb splitting. It cuts open on the top part of the nuckle. I started having the problem at the end of last season and then I took a little break over the summer and when I started bowing again within the first 10 games it already tore my thump open. I figure it must have something to do with my span but I'm not sure. Any thoughts would help..

Without being to physically see your thumb, and the fit of your ball, it is impossible to say positively. But I would be willing to say that you need to seek a competent fitter/driller.
Have them check the span, thumb pitches, and size of the thumbhole. It almost sounds like you may be squeezing the ball (bending the thumb) thus causing the soreness/cuts.
Best off to find out who drills/fits for the top bowlers in your area, and have them check it out.

Very often the bak of the thumb is too long a span or too short!  More often too long.

Also too large a hole that causes you to bend knuckle.

REgards,

PS a possible solution is to drill two holes at the point of the split.  One hole for each new section of the split thumb!  (JOKE).

My thumb was tearing at the base of my thumb when I had to threw with more revs then usual.  Like if you were looking on my palm, it would be where my thumb connects to my hand.  Well, after about 25 tear opens, I think there is so much scare tissue that it can't tear open again .
