I don't know enough about ball dynamics to answer this question but it seems like a gimic companies would have started doing a long time ago.  Is is static weight issues?  Production costs?  Not enough increase in performance to bother?  Just bored and curious and thought this might be an interesting topic of discussion.

can remember which one it is but was looking at ordring a ball and it was there to order for right or left hand.  Believe it was on a very strong Aysmetrical ball

There was a quantum on ebay that was right handed only which confused me. Apparantly brunswick toyed with the idea but it never took off. Im guessing it would cost too much too have two production lines to produce both types of ball and seeing as a ball is pretty symmetrical it is far easier to make a ball that fits both right and left handed people. why put money into esearching something when the current system is adequate and there will be no benefit.

"What's stopping companies from making right/left handed only balls?"

Common sense?

In your bowling dictionary/encyclopedia, see "Brunswick Helix".

the quantum was a rare mix of 2 coverstocks, the second was a stripe, and since the stripe wasn't centered, they had to do LH and RH.  It was a cool ball, (my brother had one) and was very easy to tell when the ball flipped, because the stripe made the ball turn gold due to the change in roll at the breakpoint.

The original, gold pearl urethane over a black/blue resin, was a MAJOR failure in marketing and execution for 99% of the  bowlers who tried it. The Blue/Red, Helix II, was major execution success, but ignored by the bowlers who considered the $300 Helix I a Major failure. Funny about that. Once burnt, twice shy.

The closest you'll find to LH/RH balls today are asyms with the CG out of line with the pin/MB.  Some of them probably couldn't be drilled in any reasonable way for the wrong hand and not have a 3" weight hole.  If the CG is too far left, unless the top weight it real low, you'd be limited to something that looked like a label drill (in an asymmetric sense) just to keep the statics in line.

Thank you for reminding me. My buddy has a Quantum Helix in 16# that I sold to him a while back. It never worked for me cause the ball was drilled for high track, at the time I was a low tracker. Now that im a high track player, that ball might work out for me.

I dont think the Helix was a very high seller for a few reasons. 1, its very style specific. 2, too overpriced for the performance and 3, it was never marketed very well in my area. Ive only seen about 4 helix's in my area, 3 with the gold pearl and mine with the red pearl. The other companies saw that brunswick struggle with this ball so im sure that gave them the answer to how that idea played out.

There was another one, too. "The Axe" from a company owned by one mister John Fabanich (i.e, Faball, Hammer, etc.). You had to order them left and right.

I had a funny experience with Quantums. I loved the original Helix, hated the Double Helix. That's backwards from most.
