Sport Shot vs. House shot tourneys

This is more of a poll, and its something i've been thinking about for awhile, and just wanted some opinions also.  More aimed to the 200 avg league bowler.  

My friend, Randy Weiss (he was leading the USBC all events last I checked) bowled a house shot tournament two weekends ago.  The shot was pretty easy, but neither one of us shot much, we both avg. probably close to 205 for 8 games.  And as a result, we got destroyed by bowlers, who considered by there form and spare shooting abilities that this was all they could bowl on.  Now two weeks before that, we bowled a local tourney that put out a pba pattern.  In that tourney, we both avg close to 210-215 and were at the top of the leader board.  Most bowlers that I saw competed in both events and for this tourney, there scores diminished.  It got a little frustrating.

Now, its not a knock on the others players abilities.  I'll be the first to tell you that I struggle on the wet/dry lanes at Ashley lanes in Charelston.  I've never made a cut there. I just want to know if you would rather bowl on a tough shot or an easy shot, and do you believe that some bowlers match up better on flatter patterns and/or different houses.  Some want the scores to be lower, others think they have a better shot if its easier to get to the pocket.  Which one are you?

I would much rather bowl on a Sport Shot for a tourney than on a THS.

There are a few 190-200 bowlers from my area who come out to all the tournaments, THS and the few sport tourneys we have. They usually do somewhat decent in the THS tournies, but when they come to the sport tournies they are always -300 or so after 6 games.

I prefer sport tournies because it really shows who has the most skill when it comes to bowling.

I might as a favor fill out a team or doubles on a house shot, but if it's my money, it won't be spent on a THS tournament.  I bowl leagues on them enough and I don't feel it differentiates the good bowlers from the bad often enough.

I am still in youth bowling. I am in the top 25 men in Minnesota under 22. I will bowl at THS tournament but I would much rather bowl on sport. Last month I was at a THS event and I was top qualifier of the 6 game block at +196. In my first game of match play I got beat by a 12 year old because no matter where he put the ball it was a strike. This kid threw a 278 followed by a 159 in the tournament. It is just such a waste of money at those things.

Sport shot all the way, otherwise it's just another carry contest.

It's the only way to improve ones game.

I'd do anything with the word tournament in it.  Sure, a THS may be easier, but an 8 game marathon on them is still something you don't see in league.  Regardless of shot, a tournament is a great way to gain experience that league doesn't offer.

Actually, you've got a good point. I usually enter all local tournaments, sports or not. It's good learning experience for my level. (I'm just an average bowler)

I prefer hybrid shots for local tournaments. Oil outside is fine by me; it lets me play outside.

I believe THS shots should be tightened up and tournament shots would be better served to have more oil put outside however I don’t believe a totally flat pattern in needed. I would prefer a moderately tough pattern that is not extremely tough to get to the pocket if you make decent shots.

But that aside, while a bowler’s average difference between the shots may not be as great as others they should still be able to score high(er) on a THS.  If you can’t then there is some limitation in your game.

Some bowler’s styles match up better to one or the other but the skilled bowler should be able to score on both.

I actually prefer a tougher shot.  I bowled in a doubles tournament a few years back that was a reverse block with a 3 board strip from 10-13 that was playable.  I stayed in that groove and posted a high 600 (681, I think).  My partner shot a high 500 with handicap and we placed 2nd in the tournament.  Meanwhile, other people were dealing with sloppy track area and flying middles.  Scores weren't exactly outstanding.

I bowled in another doubles tournament that had (honest assessment here) oil all the way to the backstops.  Absolutely no break whatsoever.  I slowed the ball down to creep speed (13-14 mph) and cupped the ball like Del Ballard, Jr.  The end result was a 621 series while everyone else around me was shooting low to mid 500's.  I won my brackets, but because my partner hadn't the foggiest clue about slowing the ball down, we didn't cash in the tournament itself.

I love PBA shots.  I thrive in the PBA tournament venues.

Yeah, gimme the tough stuff.  The THS tournaments are for people with handicap.

It depends on the tournament.  If handicap, I prefer the THS.  If scratch, I prefer the sport shot.

On the tougher shots, the lower average bowler doesn't see as much score differential as the higher averages.

This is true.
When we had a PBA league in town, the 150-160 THS average bowlers bowled about the same on the PBA patterns. The 210-225 THS bowlers dropped 30-50 pins!
