Title: Starting over
Post by: SrKegler on July 31, 2022, 03:10:24 PM
Start my first league in years shortly.  Need some new equipment, don't really know where to start.  Currently have an old Motive Tribal I can use until I can get back in the swing of things.  If any of you old timers recognize me, drop me a message.

Oh my gawd, so great to see you back here.

Purple Hammer is all you’ll ever need, mind you with your accuracy a spare ball will be just as good.

It’s so great to see you’re back rolling the orb again. Now all I have to do is come across a few thousand pounds and come over the pond to give you a lesson again, or is that receive a lesson. Ha ha.

As close as I can figure, been gone 7 years.  After they took out the miscellaneous and only had ball reviews just wasn't the fun.  Been a rough 7 years, stroke, 2 battles with pancreatic cancer, surgery, chemo.  Threw 2 games today for the first time.  Boy do I suck, left leg still doesn't move like it should.  On the bright side, didn't throw any gutter balls though.  Guess that's something.  Just found out Lane1 went out of business.  Don't know how much I can contribute to the forum, everything has changed so much.  Glad to recognize some of the handles.

Welcome back and after all the stuff you have been through, glad you are still with us.  If you are looking at getting a new piece or two; dont go urethane as the other poster suggested as the first piece; especially if all you are doing is bowling leagues.  What I would suggest is a good mid performance symmetric hybrid like a Hyped Hybrid.  It is a ball that doesnt roll too quickly nor does it get too flippy on the backend.  You could also do a Scorpion but may need to do a slight surface adjustment as it comes out of the box at 2000 abralon.  Either one is a mid performance hybrid that would be a good starting point and could work well on typical league conditions.

Miscellaneous is still here, I think you meant the old Anything Goes forum or whatever it was called.

Glad to hear that you survived all of those health issues, but if you are like most of us seniors, you probably lost ball speed due to age and injuries and kept your revs so you are now more rev dominant than you used to be.  If so, then you may want to look for balls on the weaker side of hook or those with longer length.  I will leave it up to others more knowledgeable on equipment to make suggestions.

If not, and not all seniors lose ball speed, then let this forum know so they can make the proper ball suggestions.  Of course, you might find out that your older equipment still matches up to the lane conditions.

Have fun.

I would take a look at the blue vibe just released.  Great ball for the money and particularly good for us seniors

Ocean Vibe 14 2.51 .045 not an overly weak ball CT Reactive Plus.  All depends on SrKegler's ball speed to rev rate and his house lane condition.

Thanks for all the advice.  Started on a mixed league tonite.  Found a 10# ebonite cyclone to use.  Only shot 460 but found the mechanics are still there.  Could hit the pocket about 80% but no carry.  Few 7-10 Dropped a #14 Tribal off for resurfacing and grips.  Will use that for a few weeks and decide where to go from there.  Have lost some speed (not that I had much to start with) down lane sensors said ball speed 14 mph.  Will see how the 14# compares next week.

Awesome. It’s really great that you’re even out on the lanes.

It brings back some of the happiest memories of mine and Mandy’s life hearing that you’re able to enjoy something that you truly love. Just wish we could join you.

Keep rolling on.

Glad you're back on the lanes. Don't fret about the speed buddy. You're right where you need to be. My regular striking speed is 13.65mph according to sensors. And that's all I need right now to be a 69 year old senior!

First and foremost, welcome back.  I'm glad to hear you're doing a lot better after going through all of the health issues.

All of the brands are making good equipment these days.  I would also add in a vote for the new Ocean Vibe.  The Vibe series of balls has been great for many years and it's certainly something I would consider.

Within the Storm brands, the Roto Grip Hustle or Storm Hyped Hybrid gives you a lot of ball for the price, just like the Vibe.

Motiv has rounded out their line pretty nicely as well and something like the Blue Coral Venom or Fatal Venom could also fit the bill.  Those are similar to the Tribal that you mentioned in a previous post.  In fact, I still keep a Tribal Fusion in the bag for lighter oil as it's a ball that still matches up to my game several years after I bought it.

There are a lot of good choices out there now.  It'll just depend on what you feel most comfortable with and reaction that you prefer to see.

Love seeing names like this pop up from time to time. Good stuff. Wish you good health and good scores.
