PBA Players Income
« on: April 06, 2012, 08:53:49 PM »
I was curious how PBA players make a living.  I see that the players are pretty much winning $15k-$25k per tournament now, but that isn't really that much.

Is the ball sponsorship the bulk of the average players income?  Who pays for the players transportation, lodging, etc.?

Do you think most of the players do a lot of side betting off the tour to make income too?

I'm sorry if this isn't appropriate, but I'm really drawn to the tour for some reason, even though it seems harder and harder to view it (I'm not paying for Xtra Frame)  because of less televised tournaments.

I am not a PBA bowler but was told its really a hard to make a living unless you dominating the sport...  Most PBAs have sponsors that provide bowling equipment and they get a real discount when practicing or whatever.  They are given so much money  2 spend as they wish but they have to bowl with thats sponsors equipment only and can only wear that sponsors shirts...  Most important matter - Win tournaments..

Most PBA I know bowl in avg tournaments like everybody else because they couldnt make any cash in the big tournaments...  I believe if you are a PBA you should be reward that you bowl PBA tournaments or give back your card and lose those benefits...

Off the subject but if you really like the PBA you are missing out by not paying for Xtra Frames. They show you stuff you can never get on tv and the match play portion of the tournament is often better than the show.

They pretty much pay for all their own travel, lodging, meals, insurance, etc.

Ball company sponsorships are pretty much free equipment deals and other than a handful of the top guys very little extra money. There is some ball money for TV appearances but even that has gotten pretty lean.

I'm sure there are some who have some side action going on but I don't believe the majority do it.

To be honest, most are not making a what I would call a decent living being out there.

I don't know now because the PBA really doesn't have a tour or much of one. But a few years ago or so the "exempt" tour members were getting a salary for just showing up in the tournament. I have no idea how much it was but thought it was over a 1000 dollars. It paid for your spot at least. I have no idea if this is still around. All I know since the mid 00's the PBA has cut the top place finish from the 30-40k range to the 10-20k range not counting the majors. Yet, some of these bowlers have been bowling as much as possible outside the PBA and not just regionals....such as Japan, the Weber Cup and Europe stops.

When are you going to stop posting ignorance?  The PBA never paid exempt bowlers a salary.  All it meant was they didn't have to bowl in the rabbit squads.  Now if you want to count the savings a pro would have on hotel and food not having to be at a Tourney site a couple of days later than rabbit squad bowlers that is one thing.  But NEVER has the PBA paid salaries to bowlers.

The PBA never paiod a "salary", BUT, when the exempt tour started the exempt players did get a weekly check of approx $1200.00 per tournament. This basically paid their entry fee and some of their weeks expenses. It has since been decreased and is now down near to the $800.00 per week range. So no it is not a salary, but it did help them.

As stated it is very difficult to seek out a living on the tour itself, even if you were extremely dominating at a consistent rate. Most have "side" income from doing clinics, owning pro shops, etc. Also they enter regionals, more local tourney's that allow PBA members, and their was at least one or two that also were assistant coaches at the college level.

We have Jack Jurek, Brad Angelo, Joe Ciccone, Ryan Cimmenelli, Liz Johnson here locally. Jack owns a nice pro shop, Brad runs a very successful camp/clinics. I know Joe bowls a lot of stops in regionals along with Ryan, and all get involved in many local tourneys and shootouts.
