Storm Mix vs. Traditional Polyester?

   Looking for a new spare ball and wanted to see if any people have had better success with a weaker urethane like the mix. And if so how much stronger is the mix compared to a traditional polyester ball.

I have the Red/Silver Mix and love it. I wanted a ball that would go straight or hook a wee a bit like 2-3 inches or so if I wanted it to hook and the this Mix works perfect for me.  I bought it mostly for the corner pins and it is perfect for my style and better yet for the 3-10 split than anything else for me. That is my experience. I can't speak for others. Ball has a 1" pin and drilled pin under RF with the CG kicked out just a bit and no weight hole.

For me it definitely was as I wanted a ball that could be thrown straight like a polyster or could be thrown to barely hook and it did that, plus it is cheap and inexpensive. Only sixty some dollars when I bought mine plus drilling. I think it only has something like 2-3 inches of flare.

The reason most people use urethane instead of plastic for spares is longevity.  Urethane balls are less prone to typical damage you get from plastic. 

The amount of hook shouldn't be a big concern.  If you practice with it, I doubt you would notice the limited amount of movement you would get compared to plastic.

If you throw it to hook, the difference is definitely noticeable. What I like about the red/silver Mix is it is easy for me to throw it straight like a plastic ball or throw it with the slight hook it is capable of. With a plastic ball, I can't do that. Again speaking of how it works for myself and can't speak for others.

I guess it depends on how you got to the point of using your Mix as a strike ball.  If you had no other options and it was all that was left in your bag, then I can see using it.

But if your intent is to have a urethane ball be used as a spare ball AND a strike ball, then I would normally not recommend the Mix.  Something with a more dynamic of a core and perhaps a stronger cover is usually the better option IF the purchase is intended to kill two birds with one stone.

But if the ball is intended to just be a spare ball, then the Mix is a good option.

That is the purpose my Mix was purchased for and  serves well. I thought that is what the OP was wanting, but maybe I misunderstood....

I think I misunderstood.  I misinterpreted your statement about "hooking" the ball as meaning you would use it as a strike ball.

I switched from polyester to urethane as a spare ball 3 years ago, have been very happy with the change.  For me urethane can still be thrown relatively straight, but is more predictable than polyester.  Sometimes polyester will seem to squirt in oil, or jump off the end of the oil a bit.  Spares like the 3-6-10 are much easier for me with urethane

Sometimes i have a problem with getting it to the gutter too fast and the ball falling in it before hitting the 10 pin  :'(. That why i was looking at urethane to have just that little extra bite to keep it on line. Was even considering the super natural but that might give me too much motion.

I had the same exact problem, thus the reason I got the red/silver Mix and it has worked perfect for me.

The squirt I was talking about is what you guys are seeing on 10 pins sometimes.  Plastic skids a bit more in oil, and grabs a bit quicker in dry than urethane.  There has been a noticeable trend towards urethane for spares by top players over the last 3 years.

Not trying to be combative (Is that the right word?) but why not just add some surface to the plastic? I get the whole urethane thing, and I agree with it, but changing the surface on a plastic ball would get close to the same thing, no?

You might get a similar reaction by adding some surface to plastic.  However plastic and urethane have different friction coefficients and react differently to surface alterations.  For example I throw a blue hammer wet sanded to 4000.  I still don't get the squirt, but rather a small more continuous move.  Would plastic act the same way.  Not sure.  Also I think the 3 piece cores in most plastic balls promote a jumpier look coming off the oil.  My problem with plastic wasn't that it consistently squirted, but rather it occasionally squirted depending on what part of the lane I was crossing.
