Strained ring finger from tucking pinky
« on: April 08, 2008, 04:17:06 PM »
I recently started tucking my pinky just to experiment with my release a bit and I liked it so I bowled the sunday jackpots tucked and rolled the ball pretty well (708).  So I figured heck why change back and started league tonight with it tucked.  In the 3rd frame of the first game my ring finger started to hurt down by my first knuckle, almost in my palm.  It wasn't a big deal as I just untucked the pinky and didn't have an issue after that.  I noticed that tucking the pinky puts most of the ball weight on my ring finger on the down swing which I assumed was what caused the pain.  Possiby because the pinky took on some of the weight in the past?  Anyone else had this problem when the first started with the tuck?  I like the feeling but I would rather not mess my finger up.  Maybe ease into it a little more?

Tucking causes me discomfort as well.

I solved that, in a way, when I started drilling pinky finger holes in all my equipment. It won't work for everyone but might work for you. The pinky ends up in the ball approximately where it would be if it was tucked.

I think I liked tucking it because it was out of the way and wasn't touching the ball anymore.  I'm not sure if the pinky and I would get along if I gave it some lift lol.  I guess it's something to think about next time I mess with a drilling on an old ball though.

Tucking pinky is how I injured my ring finger.

The pain was at the bottom of my ring finger, where it joins the hand/palm. The pain/soreness lasted for over two years! My ring finger is better now, though I can still feel discomfort once in a while. Guess tucking pinky isn’t for everyone, so if it’s hurting, it’s best to stop to prevent any long-term damage.

Good luck!

I also hurt my ring finger from tucky my pinky when I was back in college.  Tucking your pinky isn't a bad thing as long as you have your pitch / span modified to accomidate it.  The pain comes from the added stress / stretch being put on your finger and tendon.  It's a pretty easy thing to feel if you you extend your hand flat, push your ring finger back some and then tuck your pinky you can feel ho much tighter everything feels.  Now imagine that with a bowling ball pushing back on your finger.

Tucking the pinky is IMHO not a long-term option. Some players might get along with it for some time, but the strain on the pinky and the hand itself is great. It is rather an additional option if you need some extra punch in the ball, e. g. when the lane is tight - but the risks for your helath are pretty big.

Some time ago a friend of mine also found the extra potential with this release trick, trying to maximize his ball reaction at any time. But he also had to drop it because wear and tear take their toll - and I doubt that anyone can keep it up permanently.

I only use it when need too. It will put alot of strained on your fingers if you use it often.

My grip actually feels better when I tuck my pinkie.  I always do it because it feels good and lets me get a more consistent release.

I too have tucked my pinky for the past 14 years, and have no discomfort from this.  As with all things that are changes in a routine, your body needs to get used to it before it will feel natural.  For example, if I untuck my pinky it feels very weird to me and it feels like I don't have as good of a grip on the ball.

It's not so much the weight shift on the ring finger as it is the general strain because the ring finger is now flexing more. You noticed that when you hold your hand open and curl your pinky, the ring finger moves, too. The ring finger is no longer relaxed.

I notice alot more soreness in my forearm from tucking the pinky. I only do it ever so often, and with the pain in my forearm, i'm gonna do it even less.

I've been tucking my pinky for over 20 years.  No issues.
