Strongest ball for heavy oil
« on: October 09, 2018, 11:55:54 PM »
It is partly operator error, but bowled tonight on heavier oil for first time in a long time and hated it. Since I was asked to sub on short notice, I only had old light oil balls and between that and my low revs, it was futile.

Probably not subbing again for at least a couple weeks, but vowed to myself that I’m going to have a decent weapon with me next time in the form of a ball designed for the heaviest oil pattern.

Yes... I do realize that “hook in a box” won’t raise my average all by itself. But tonight was ridiculous and seemed more like shuffleboard than bowling.

So any suggestions appreciated.

Ebonite Choice, Quantum Bias, RG Halo, Katana Dragon, Sure Lock big oilers right now.  Still be sure it true heavy oil which is rarely the case on house shot or real easy to find yourself with the opposite problem.  Honestly I recommend a RG Idol for maximum versatility on oil even if not the strongest possible.

Ok, I'll throw my hat in the ring. I really like the look of the Contiuum on a heavy house shot. I know you may be saying "Silly Doom, you're supposed to pitch your high end ball , right Mr Staffer?" but hear me out.

2000 grit on a ball that has a strong resin cover, without any "additives", it's going to offer you more response off the friction than the DCT series. Normal big ball specs (2.48, .054) but the high intermediate diff is important, because it's going to really read the midlane, which I find on a slick house shot is of super importance, since the lane is going to break down at some point, and it will read the transition better than a skid flip ball like a Dream On.

Trident Abyss is also right up there for the flood of oil as well...

"Too strong for a ths, C+" according to Tamer Bowling  ;) YMMV, their lower-rev guy had more success of course.
The Future of Bowling: Bowling is a once-popular tavern game played with a heavy ball and ten pins.

I like my Choice when I can throw it. Most of the time, it is too strong and burns up at the arrows. It is fantastic when I see enough oil though!

we have a shop worker that has the Choice and Abyss. Choice was used 5 games and put on the used ball rack. He just never liked the roll. He drilled an Abyss, it was an arrow stronger and unusable after game 1. The 2 balls were drilled the same, but gave him 2 completely different reactions. Neither were ones he favored for a THS.

I admit that I didn’t like the choice when I first got it. I thought it was a turd. I even was telling people that it kinda sucked. Then when I found the oil, the ball had a really sweet roll for me. It is controllable enough to be very readable and predictable, but generates just enough angle to be able to keep moving left and kick out corner pins, where other high end oilers I have had have wanted to 7 or 10 pin me to death. I was one premature adjustment from shooting 290 a couple weeks ago.

Thanks.

Not certain, but think it IS still a house shot (at least for THAT house).

Haven’t bowled there very much, but don’t think it’s anything special like sport shot or tournament shot. And maybe the next time I’m there in about 3 weeks, it won’t be quite as extreme, cause their A/C was either broke or just not doing the job and it was in mid 80’s outside —- very rare this time of year in Chicago. So the humidity was a factor.

But definitely want to have a stronger ball in the bag next time just in case.

If the Abyss is too much ball, I recommend getting a Villain or Rogue Blade and adding some surface. Before the Abyss came out, I used both the Villain and Blade at 1000 for oil and it works great.

My ball of choice is the Kingpin Max.  Its just a straight up tank.
Quantum Bias is my go to for a little more bite down the lane as the oil pushes down
