Need Guru HELP!!
« on: September 03, 2015, 02:51:14 PM »
My problem is dry back-ends and my slow ball speed.  What do I look for to get a ball that rolls in an arc rather than "hockey stick" action back-end? What RG and Diff?
What particular ball do you recommend? I throw from 14# to 16#
Thank You all.

Try a Hammer Arson Low Flare, drill it with a 1 1/2 - 2" pin to PAP, locate the cg to give about 1/2 oz of positive side weight and use a 75 degree angle to the VAL.  --  JohnP

Coverstock is the highest influencing factor in ball motion (if you cont believe me hit a plastic ball with 250 wet and dry and see what it does!)

Before buying a new ball I would try highly polishing one of your existing ones.  If that still hooks to much, hit it with an automotive wax and polish.   You can always undo the polish process later with a resurface, but yo may find that coverstock adjustment is enough to get the extra length you are after...

I would also consider ADDING surface to the ball as opposed to polishing. Adding surface can help the ball expend some of its energy earlier on the lane so that the back end stays smooth and controllable. We have a guy in my house with a slow speed and a lot of hand, and he uses 500 grit (or lower) on his Asylum. The surface helps tame the ball down, and his hand still gives it enough to get back up the hill and hit with authority. I did something similar when bowling two-handed. I had a Hyroad that went sideways with the box finish, so I always kept it at a fresh 2000. The ball still had plenty of pop, but it blended the reaction out a great deal.

I have started to respond to this thread a couple of times, then backed off.  I think the problem here is not super dry back ends ( they may be ) but a ball speed problem with respect to your rev rate.  Assuming you cant do anything about your ball speed I would go to a very tame ball, maybe even a Ride, or urethane ball.  You might even have some luck with shining some of your current equipment up as the previous poster suggested.    Not really sure without watching your game.

Hi Gene, I just read the original issue that he wants to get rid of the hockey stick hook and get more of an arc.  So yes, you are right.  Polishing the gear will carry the energy longer, but may end up making the transition a sharper hook when it gets to the dry.

Need a tame drilling/ weight block, maybe even a pancake urethane...
