US Woman's Open, "The Slot" and Wristbraces
« on: September 30, 2007, 04:53:50 PM »
As I watched Missy Belinder and Liz Johnson last week and then Linda Barnes in the first game today before her awesome 289 on TV.

I was thinking to myself.  "I saw Linda Barnes back in the queens and loved how she threw it".  "Really firm thru the slot".

Just like in Golf I love when people in bowling are "slotted".

You know in bowling it's that deep knee bend in the front knee.  The ball real close to the slide ankle(less than two inches) and that firm look thru the ball.

Missy Belinder did it so well!  Beautiful foot position with her slide heel closer to the ball!

I wonder...have these woman all suffered an injury to their wrist and that is why they have to use one?

Or do they just bowl better and firmer by using one!

The 3 above....all wrist brace users looked so good.  Of course so does Michelle Feldman look good but in a different way.  How many of us can throw like Michelle Feldman!  (NOT ME!).

I had this conversation with a friend who used to be a sports medicine major and worked with high schools on staff after graduating before changing career directions.

He made the point that the major difference between men and women physiologically was in the upper-body. I doubt leverage is an issue between sexes, but anything from the waist up is fair game, especially in the swing-lever mechanism.

I have a teammate who is in my opinion one of the best female bowlers in the area. I had been watching another teammate get help from a Gold level coach after league one night, that made him take his brace off permanently (and also witnessed his shot improve over the next several weeks as a result). I was discussing that incident with her, and she decided to rid her brace as well. Her shot improved quite a bit too. She went from averaging low 190's to over 200 from Summer to Fall with a 750 series not too long ago.

I guess you can't really say that it's entirely a gender related issue, since you can find just as many men using braces as you do women, and there are also cases where not using them can benefit both sexes.
