Seriously, I am begining to believe the theory that older balls from the early-mid 1990's like the rhinos, original zones and hammers hit like a tank and carry and these new hybrid covers are crap. This teal 1993 rhino straight up murdered the pins tonight and none of my new stuff came close. it cost me a 1.99 and 26 bucks to plug and drill.
lets face it... this isnt deadlifting or picking up women.. its BOWLING!!!! Stop acting tough when you roll 4 strikes in a row!!!

the point is you have to bring equipment that works to the lane conditions you face. new bowling balls are designed to face the thicker oils being used every year.

If you bowl on old wood, scorched synthetics, light oil applications that dry up quickly, or you're just one of those rare individuals who can throw cow chips and still score big, then get out that old orb.

In general, if you fish an old classic out of a dumpster, you'll be handicapping yourself in most situations. Still, it's a good idea to carry a precious oldie just in case you hit one of these odd ball situations.

Agreed, on THS it's possible to use an older ball but on some of the newer tournament patterns you'll be handicapped using older equipment.

Also, as a side note, the older covers were not designed to absorb conditioner like the newer ones do, thusly they seem to have MUCH greater lifespans.

They do absorb minute amounts, but at a much slower rate than the mew "HIGH PERFORMANCE" stuff.

Get you a good micro fiber towel and keep your older stuff wiped down between frames and that will even increase their lifespan more.

here's the deal why this is true.  The fact is typical house shots are so walled that someone with decent revs and newer equipment ends up in reaction jail on the lanes, because every time they miss right the ball over hooks and goes high but then there's SOOOOO much volume in the middle a small miss left will cause you to wash-out or 2-10 all day.  So with older stuff you get to move right and actually play the friction a little more because it won't react as violently off of it as these new covers do.  But on the flip, take both a newer release and this teal rhino to something blended a bit more or even a bit flatter and I guarantee you'll have about 5 more boards of miss room with the newer equipment.

I'm using my Purple Rhino pro.

Even the Avalanche Slide is too much ball for what I'm seeing out on the lanes.

The Rhino Pro Teal along with the Black Danger Zone may have been two of the best ever by Brunswick...

Please tell us what lane condition you were on...

And the "new stuff" you have, what are they....

Now many times today you are bowling on light oil parterns... and these older models do perform...

Lets see what happens if you hit a flood with them...

Around here,  most lanes are light - med. oil....Rarely do you see a true heavy oil pattern.... Yet I would say that about 50% of the bowlers who come in for a new ball,  feel that they are bowling on a flood.....

Black Hammers.... Here is another oldie that people love....

You must be big handed with big back ends at your center.

Those balls match up great with that set of conditions.

I Bowl on a house shot that i would say is medium oil. Im not a big brain on all the names of the patterns but when i ask our proshop guy he says the leagues are basically medium oil. they are wood lanes. The teal rhino was not jumpy it was consistent and just smashed the rack! I have the following to other balls
1) brunswick fury
2) rotogrip cell
3) columbia resurgence

The teal rhino will be my first ball out of the bag. If the lanes are oily i will simply slow the ball down. these new balls are just sensitive crap in my opinion. thanks to all the replies.

Perfect thread pf where YMMV!

What is ones light oil is another's heavy.  I am amazed the UN-reality of what MOST think bowling lane conditions ARE!

Same here - shot a Revolution Renegade NIB on ebay (a Brunswick overseas ball from 2000, probably PK18 solid with a mild, med RG core). Did not expect much, but the ball has proven to be a killer on medium to medium-dry conditions, esp. in tournaments. Great control, and I generally seem to fare better with older equipment that reads the lane a bit earlier and more consistently than more modern, porous coverstocks that "grab and go" as soon as they touch a dry part of the lane. Even my Blue Hammer works well when applied apporpriately.

Never underestimate "old" stuff.

That just posted yesterday, and prophecies fulfill themselves. Went to training that evening and played my personal historic high game with a 279 with the Renegade, plus 11 strikes in a row (across 2 games, though). Amazing piece.
Funny thing is that I had a 9/ count in the 4th frame - and that was made with another ball, because the lane machine had swallowed the Renegade after the 3rd shot. Who knows if I had been able to make the 4th frame with the same ball?

Yeah, "old" stuff rules!

As I said....big backends....often at wood houses and I still bet you are pretty big handed.

Good matchup.

NoseofRI is right. also houses are trying to make conditions and carry better for bowlers who have weaker releases which means better energy retention and stronger back ends.

someone earlier in this thread said excalbur came after the teal
and if im not mistaken the excalibur was the first reactive ball.
