Yeah, I said it. Bowlmor is doing bowling a favor.
The commercialization and incorporating of the bowling center as done by AMF and Brunswick wasn't any good for the bowling community. The only thing it did was make the public aware of the fact that bowling centers throw birthday parties. Franchises are not the way to go, for the most part, if you want to create an atmosphere that makes your employees treat the bowling business like it's their own (thus, empowering employees), and make the league bowler enjoy the sport. Corporate types make decisions in these places, and don't see the day to day operations. It matters.
I live in the Chicagoland area. We are not short on bowling centers in the area, but there are plenty closing. I can't say I've been to one corporate owned center that made me feel like I was a valued customer.
Now I've worked and run pro shops, and worked as a porter in locally owned centers. They feel like home. I could go talk to the owner at any time. I could bowl with them. The feel was that they wanted you. Like a good restaurant, you could go in, and know the service you're going to get, and if something is off, you could speak to the person that owns it, or a direct person linking yourself to them (GM, etc)
In a corporate center. they don't care. You're a number. A stat to bring up at the monthly phone meeting.
Let these franchise chains go. Bring back locally owned centers.
