Local owned centers...I miss them....
« on: August 20, 2014, 01:28:13 PM »
It seems like locally own centers have better leagues and/or better looking houses than AMF/Bowlmor...(looked at the houses I used to bowl up in Washington state and two locally own houses here in NorCal - there are more scratch and/or sport leagues)

The AMF/BOwlmor that I will be bowling league this year has turned into a strip joint looking place. With dark tint glass doors and different color lights which makes the alley look very dim. All it's missing is a cat walk and a pole....

Does a round object have sides? I say yes, pizza has triangles..

You should check out Fireside, that's a real bowling alley.

Or make the drive to Stockton, both houses here are private ownership.

Fireside has a doubles scratch league on Monday nights at 9pm. But, I'm not sure if it's draft....

Pacific and what's the other one?

West Lane Bowl, which by the way has the best restaurant I have come across in a bowling alley.

Hey now.  What's wrong with strip joints?

The perfect bowling center would have strippers and an OTB in the bar.  I've found places with the ponies, just none with the strippers.

You obviously have not been to West Lane Bowl.  It's true that it doesn't have a strip joint inside, there is one almost next door. The bowling alley is at 3900 West Lane,  and Deja Vu Showgirls are within a very short walk @ 4206 West Lane. :o ;D ;D

I have been to West Lane Bowl but somehow missed Deja Vu.  Been 9 or 10 years since I've been there.

Golden Pin in Tucson has (or had) the ponies in the bar and strippers just down the street about 1/2 a block.

Fireside is a great place; Steve Cook owns it outright, and Gary and Leanne Hulsenberg ran the pro shop there before taking the office job at Storm HQ. However, it like every other house in the Sacramento area, needs serious renovation.

I may be a bit biased because I moved here from Las Vegas, but nearly every house in town is dated, and dated badly. The pinsetters and ball returns look like they came from the 70s at the earliest (60s if you include Country Club), late 80s/early 90s at the latest. Coming from Vegas, there isn't an alley there older than 2000 that hasn't been renovated, if not renovated twice. So coming from a place like Gold Coast, Suncoast, Orleans, or Sunset Station, to something like Country Club looks like I've traveled back in time, and not in a nostalgic fashion.

While I understand that they can't spend money they don't have, some of the things alleys have spent money on is a joke. One such place spent more on the bar and putting in HDTVs than they did on the pinsetters and ball returns, both of which are falling apart.

If Fireside can pull it together, they can have a really killer house.

So if they are not there, who runs or owns the proshop at fireside? LBH doesn't work for Steve cook then either...?

Anyway, Capital bowl in west sactown has remodeled their center and it is really nice. You want to go back to "Happy Days" with a modern twist, check that 20 lane house. Also, It's close to my work, I can fit a practice session during my lunch break.

I agree about Fireside, but still a great place to bowl.

Hehehe.. One of the alleys in Tacoma or somewhere off of 512 hwy, there's a drive up hotdog stand/coffee, then a tit-e bar/clubs next to it. But that was like 8-9 years ago...

We are fortunate in the area I live in. Most are still local owned. One just recently sold, to an out of towner and I have heard rumors of plans, but that is what they are to me rumors.

I try to stay away from the "Bowling Politicians" as much as I can. I would rather walk away than to get involved with things as that. I have more important things to deal with.

Caleb Nakata runs the shop there now. He worked under Gary and Leanne when they owned it. Very knowledgeable kid (I say kid, because I saw him bowling youth there when I first went there; I still want to see some ID from him), I get my gear punched up from him when I don't get the chance to make it to K&K in Vegas. He knows his stuff and well. IIRC, he punches up Amanda Fry's gear as well.

He's the go-to guy if you're looking for a shop in this area.
