Bowling Pin Weight
« on: November 17, 2011, 02:36:48 AM »
Whats the standard weight of bowling pins...

I have visited serveral houses and sometimes the pins feel lighter than normal.  Then you goto other houses and the pins feel like they weight is heavier...  Any ideas and why this happens or is this my imagination...

No less than 3lb 6 oz and no more than 3lb 10 oz.

The ones in most bowling alleys will be around the 3lb 6 oz area. There are specific "Gold Pin" tournaments where all the pins are 3lb 10 oz. It's a much tougher environment and carry is much more challenging.

Also as pins get more use, their bottoms get chipped and rounded, and so they fall more easily. If you get a new set of pins (they usually look much whiter and brighter) & if they're the same type as you had, they'll fall with more difficulty because the bottoms are totally flat.

ALso different houses have different depth gutters and have different degree of "bounciness" to their side boards. This affects pins' ability to stay standing or fall more easily. More shallow gutters make pins bounce out of the gutter more easily. It's hard for pins to bounce out of deeper gutters.

Usually newer pins also have a heavier log sound to them till they get in several games.

corrected.
When was the last time the USBC measured the depth of both gutters on every lane in your house?
AND made the owner correct every one that did not meet their specs?
