The best ball for heavy oil
« on: April 12, 2013, 08:05:39 PM »
I need some advice as to what the best ball is for heavy oil patterns. I am a high speed medium rev down and in bowler. I had the 900 global bank roll because it was a really low rg ball, but still wasn't getting the results I'd hoped to. Also, would an early hooking layout be better than a more arcing layout? Pin down rather than pin up? Help! I'm relatively new to bowling and need some solid advice.... Thanks!!

I'll chime in with the Defiant.  For my game (18-22mph, 420 revs), it easily works on longer patterns and those with heavy volume up front.  The thing I like is that it offers a predictable motion and takes surface changes well.  I've used 2000 grit when I need an earlier read on heavier conditions.  Normally I leave it at the box 4000 grit finish.  Either way, it's a great ball and it fits a lot of styles well.

If I go back to a 5 step my speed is closer to 20mph, although I don't think I have the revs you do. As far as drilling, do you know if it would be better for an early hook on heavy patterns or long and late reaction? Pin up or pin down?

on heavy oil your gonna want the ball to start reading the lane sooner so i would do a pin down to make it start sooner and have a nice controllable reaction.

A ball with some surface. The Radical Reax is a very very strong ball to consider with others mentioned.

+1.  My Defiant is drilled pin down to get an earlier read and be smoother overall downlane.   I actually replaced my VG Nano with the Defiant and like the Defiant more due to the predictability and how it provides more of a hard arc motion compared to being more angular.  I also like that it is a little more versatile than the Nano.

Several people in my league have one, including myself, a 2-hander who puts 500+ revs on it, and a stroker who is probably around 300 revs.  All 3 of us have had good results.

So if the coverstock and texture comprise of about 65%, should I hold out for the AMF Incinerate with the F90 coverstock coming out in May?
