The Gathering 2009 - UPDATE
« on: November 17, 2008, 03:37:33 PM »
I heard from Ron and he is good for whenever we decide.  The group had to make a decision to skip Vegas.  SOOOOOO let's make it official for July 24 - 26.

For those new to BR, this is an annual gathering of bowlers from all over.  It basically involves bowling, socializing, bowling, eating, bowling, eating, bowling, drinking, bowling, eating, and oh did I mention bowling .  Our own Magic Carpet, Mrs Magic Carpet, and the staff at Creekside host this gathering each year.  They are amazing!

Friday night the center has a Mixed Scotch Doubles that many participate in.  Saturday is the Bragging Rights Tournament for the coveted "Bragging Rights Champion T-Shirt."  Sunday, for those who hang around, Ron offers some one-on-one coaching.  For those who arrive early, it is impromptu.

Toma and Nollster have traditionally organized some golfing and Strider has opened his house for pool and poker Saturday night after the "official" dinner at "Golden Corral."

Many stay at the Extended Stay, Haines Mall.  Due to a situation last year, I personally will be looking at other options.

Hotel most have stayed at in the past:

As details are finalized, I will update with specifics.  I have been to the previous 6 and always look forward to the next one.  If you are even remotely considering attending, do so, you won't regret it.  I realize the current economic times may make it tough, but I am looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones.  This year I plan to do more than be scorekeeper at the Bragging Rights Tournament !

Just got back home for the evening.  I'm whipped.  Bowled some warm up, the Bragging Rights Tournament, then stayed and bowled the elimination tournament.  To tell you how hard the Bragging Rights Tournament was, Janderson and myself finished 10th and 12th? out of 16, but we both made money at the elimination tournament finishing 4th and 5th.

We won't bother to mention who won the tournament that matters.  All right, it was my wife.  She doesn't even post here and she won the most coveted prize in all of bowling!  I really won't mention that she beat me SCRATCH the first game with her 9# plastic ball.  Three different sport patterns and I think most if not everyone did better than on the house shot used at the Scotch Doubles Friday night.

Great to see many of the regulars.  Doug (robuster?), Dave (Senior Stroker?) and Jason (bowlerdawg) and Amanda were the new comers.  I'll try to add more after some beer.

The 7th Annual BR Gathering (2009) was this past weekend (July 25-26th). As usual, it was a fun event with much bowling and camraderie, some fun competitions, discussions of equipment, good food, and reuniting with friends.

We (my wife 10poundBear and I) arrived about noon on Friday and joined up with the rest of the group already at the lanes. We bowled 3 games to loosen up and Ron (Magic Carpet) came out of bowling semi-permantent retirement to bowl with us. At about 2pm we started the for-fun blind doubles tournament featuring a mixed format. The lead changed hands after ever game. The eventual winners were robuster (Doug) and dpmusic70 (Diane), a team made up of someone new to the Gathering this year and a 4-year veteran of the event respectively. I think everyone enjoyed it, although we learned that "Scotch Doubles" format means slightly different things to different people.

Afterwards, the entire group went for italian food at Little Italy 4, in Welcome North Carolina. As you cross into Welcome, the city sign says "Welcome to Welcome, a Friendly Place". Nice. The food was recommended by Ron and Karen and was everything they said it would be, but mostly delicious. The restaurant staff made us feel, well... welcome! ... and the service was impeccable. I think the group would have liked to linger over dessert, but we were pressed for time. A Scotch doubles tournament, which is held regularly on Saturday night at Creekside lanes, was about to start.

Back to the bowling center we drove. For the first time anyone could remember, more women showed up to bowl than men, so a couple of us guys got to double-up with two doubles partners. This event is pretty fun with one or the other of each doubles partner throwing the first ball in the frame with the other partner picking up whatever is left. It's always fun with a large group, especially when marital couples are involved. If I remember correctly, we had two teams from the Gathering finish in the money. By the time the tournament was over, it was late and most of us had bowled 10 games, so it was time to sojourn to our various places of sojourn.

Saturday, we resumed at 11am. A couple more people showed up who did not make it on Friday including both locals and members of BallReviews.com including two first-timers BowlerDawg and SeniorStroker. We bowled a game of practice and went straight into the bragging rights tournament. This was a little early this year because of another tournament - an Eliminator style tournament - coming in at 2pm.

This year, the event was renamed the first-annual ThongPrincess Bragging Rights Tournament. The format was 3 games across 3 pairs of lanes with each pair of lanes featuring a different sport pattern. The patterns were not announced ahead of time and even Ron didn't know what the mechanic was using. My best guess, based on literally minutes of experience, was that the patterns were (or were similar to) PBA Cheetah, the USBC Nationals, and the Kegel Middle of The Road.

Scores are typically pretty low and this year was no exception. I'm hoping that someone from Creekside lanes can post the official results (and the patterns that were used), but the Handicap winner was Strider's (from BR.com) wife Tricia who bowled excellently. My wife finished 2nd for the 3rd consecutive year, which means she beat me for the third consecutive year! The scratch winner was Willynhook who posted a nice 248 on (what we thought was) Cheetah. There was some major gender domination this year on the handicap side as 5 of the top 6 finalists were female and this is the second year in a row in which the event was won by a female.

Strider and I entered the Eliminator tournament directly afterwards. Again, it was hosted on a sport pattern. I believe we were the only two from the Gathering group who entered, but everyone else hung out to socialize and cheer us on (thanks everyone!). Jeff and I both made it to the single-game finals which was comprised of 7 bowlers, and Strider edged me out by a pin. Nice bowling Strider.

We had another large group for dinner at Applebees which provided free appetizers for the group. I daresay we were the loudest group in the restaurant by a factor of 6 or 7. The poor service staff was trying to sing happy birthday to a couple of different people and had to ask us to quiet down. Willynhook's "terror twins" got pictures of the whole thing. Ron was the last to eat. I guess that's what he gets for ordering a steak medium-rare. Seriously though, the staff at Applebees did a nice job of taking care of us and put up with such a loud, rowdy group.

Sunday is usually a day of groaning pain and tired (if not tired and hungover) bowling and this year was no exception. Ron worked with StrikingMachine for quite awhile and you could see big changes in his delivery both from previous years as well as from earlier in the day. Most of us got in at least six games before it was time for boodbyes for the people that were leaving.

Ron shared with us some incredible slow-motion video of some of the past and present PBA exempt and national players as well as some bowlers you've probably never heard of who have exceptional execution and mechanics. That of course spurred new conversations which led to more video and more conersations and delayed departure times. The women-folk mostly socialized and relaxed and simply enjoyed the time with friends.

That's the most accurate description I can give of the Gathering this year - a good time with bowling friends. Sure, we had fewer in attendance this year the economy is bad and people with jobs can't take as much time off work for fear of losing a job that can be hard to find. Sure, most of us only see each other at this one event each year. That doesn't change the enjoyment of the time together. Having fewer attendees this year didn't make it any less fun. As Ron said, we half as many people we get to have twice as much fun to make up for it.

As always, the staff and Creekside Lanes treats us so well I feel like a "regular". It's like Cheers to some degree - "where everybody knows your name". There were a couple of new additions to the staff that were a little shy at first, but joined the fun before Friday was done. Some of the staff are working two jobs now to make ends meet and they still spent every possible minute with the group. That's what makes those of us that descend upon Creekside once a year feel so Welcome, like in Welcome. Andy - Ron's crash test dummy - and his wife Cindy - event hostess extraordinaire - were just returning from a trip to nationals in Las Vegas on Saturday, but drove directly from the airport to the lanes to say hello to everyone and socialize. Andy wasn't able to bowl normally this year as his leg is in a bowling cast after a nasty indoor sports accident that broke his leg in four places.

Many of the "regular" bowlers weren't able to make it to the Gathering this year for a number of different reasons. In particular, the physical absence of our "glue", ThongPrincess / Colleen Becker, was felt most acutely. However, she was there in spirit, enjoying the craziness, chaos, and fun. It was/is still difficult for many of us to talk about her, but we carried on as we know she would have wanted. We hope to see the rest of you return next year.

We also had some new attendees as mentioned above (if I'm forgetting anyone, you should be chiming in about now with your experiences). It's always great to see some new faces and this year was no different.

We also had some new and repeat locals attend. Darrel - you lurker - I know you!

Hundreds of pictures were taken this year so I hope to see them posted somewhere on the Internet for all to see. Dummy me forgot the video camera at home, so full-blown blackmail will need to wait another year.

The Fox News people were awesome and a couple of them stayed to bowl with us. It's a shame we couldn't use one of their fancy cameras for the blackmail. Has anyone found the video on YouTube yet?

Thank you Ron, Karen, and the entirely excellent staff at Creekside lanes for having us again this year. You are entirely too kind to us in every way, but we surely appreciate it. We just wish the entire staff could take the weekend off of life to join in our fun.

A date for next-year's event was decided at this year's event to be the last full weekend in July, July 24th and 25th, 2010 at Creekside Lanes. My wife was nominated to replace ThongPrincess as the bowler-organizer of the event. I'll help her with the web posting. Ron will continue to host the event at Creekside lanes and he and his staff will organize things locally. Stay tuned for more details. We hope to see you there!

I backed down from the Get-Together on last Thursday! It was the last chance to cancel my room and I had no alternative. Believe it or not on Friday my situation had changed but rather then push my luck I stayed home.

I am going bowling tonight with hopes that all be ok! I certainly did miss you guys and thought of the group the whole week-end!

I've already penciled in the dates for next year .. with the help of God I will be there! I'm so happy to hear all went well this year and I look forward to seeing the pictures!

Every one have a great year!

Mindy, Sharon, Josh (chaos twins), & I got to the gathering on friday.
As always Ron & the Creekside staff are friendly and very helpful. I got the
twins bowling first a couple lanes from the rest of the gathering folks.

I think Ron had the twins (2.75 years old) bowling on a flat sport pattern
as they had a hard time carrying corner pins from the toddler bowling ramp
that was provided, plus the generous friction bump that we are all used to on the typical
house pattern was not present (although the bumpers did help a bit).
Sharon and Josh mananged games of 71 & 90. I was a proud pop indeed.

I will note, that after some coaching on saturday from WRW Jr., Josh picked
up his game by shooting a 268 playing up the twigg with a 6 lb. house ball,
and Sharon shot a 240 using my lane one crystal diamond after some footwork
advice from Ron. I expect they will both shoot their first 300s by age 3 years.
(( Oh, and thanks to Danny Wiseman for the toddler bowling shirts! Josh
loves the blue/skull shirt and Sharon loves the flames! )).

After all the excitment, the twins retired for their afternoon naps on each day
while I got to stay and bowl bowl bowl until my legs felt like noodles.

Saturday's fun included the TP Memorial Bragging Rights Tourny, many bowling
games, watching janderson & strider finish in the money of the mini-eliminator,
seeing a parade of Hell's Angels, and dinner at Applebees. I think
the staff at Applebees didn't know what hit them. (I will share pictures that
the chaos twins took during the dinner soon.)

As for the bragging rights tournament. I think janderson's guess at the
oil patterns is probably correct. I lucked out in that I really match up
well with the cheetah (or cheetah like) pattern and had the ball for that
pattern with me. I can't take credit for the 248 game without acknowledging
that I watched janderson toss two frames down the 5 board and then I moved
over playing the same line - thanks! And, as always, I think I did my best
bowling during my lowest scoring game of 166. A game on which I had only
spares, and a split open (if I remember correctly). This was on the longer
pattern after everyone else had played on it.  The women are dominating the
TP as they can't be stopped. Congratulations to Strider's wife Trish for the
win! (Strider - I am sure she won't hold it over you all year. Ha!)

Food - Dinner first night = Little Italy #4 in Welcome, NC. Great food! A
good time was had by all. Dinner second night = Applebees next to Hanes Mall.
We took over about a 1/4th of the place and added a few decibels of excitment.
kev3inp and his wife (Diane) took pictures of everyone's meals as they seem
to record meals for posterity.

I ate about 14 chocolate chip cookies produced from the creekside kitchen.
Darn those chips! I want more. I wonder if they ship?

Ron, being a good friend of Richard Childress NASCAR racing, took us on a tour of the
RCR museum since they are based in Welcome, NC. Getting some racetrack time
in the cars was an added bonus. Danny Wiseman tied the practice oval speed
record 188mph. I only managed a paltry 165mph before I got nervous driving the
#33 Cheerios car - I didn't want to dent the pretty yellow paint.

Sunday, many of us came back and bowled more games tiring ourselves out even
more. Ron nicely coached us all a bit here and there. I need to work on footwork.
Mostly keeping them in line so that I stay on target.

We had  great time. I look forward to bowling with everyone again next year.
Kudos to Jay, Kat, Gary, JoAnn, Jason1, Jason2& Amanda, Strider & Trish, Ron,
Kevin & Diane, Creekside staff, the cookies, the Hell's Angels, and to anyone
I've forgotten. We had blast.

A lodging note: consider staying at the comfort suites off of Hanes Mall Blvd.
It is roomy, reasonable, and quiet. It also has a nice pool. The chaos twins
loved jumping into the pool 364,322 times. And, breakfast is provided!

That is my report, and I affirm its truthiness. I am sure Thongprincess was
there in spirit laughing and bowling the entire time.

Dr. Joe

I might as well put my $.02 in.

We arrived Thursday afternoon and, after checking into our room at the Extended Stay, we headed over to the bowling center.  Much to our surprise and chagrin we were the only ones that had made it so far.  We spent some time visiting with Susan (the therapy to make her "outgoing" is coming along nicely) and we said "hello" to the new and the familiar faces.

It was later than we usually arrive, so we put our equipment away and left to go to dinner at the Macaroni Grill. We like the restaurant for 2 reasons  The food is pretty damn good and portion size is more than sufficient and it's the place we had our first "romantic" dinner.

Gary and Joanne had made it to the center right after we left, so they called us to express their dismay that they weren't the first ones there and we weren't there bowling.

On Friday morning we were at the center bright and early but were the second ones there.  Gary and Joanne had beat us.  We met Robuster (Doug, nice guy, good bowler, sweats almost as much as I do) and Bowlerdawg (Jason, good looking guy, effortless revs to spare, weird trick knee) and his wife Amanda.

We bowled a few games and I found I had way too much ball for the house condition.  I only had my Rogue and my white dot, as those are the only ones I have in my new scaled down weight.  I kept moving right, but had one heck of a time keeping the ball on my side of the headpin.  Then, for whatever reason I lost my ability to make spares.

I got used to the Rogue making me look like I actually have revs and standing right and throwing left, but out of nowhere I started hooking the white dot, too.

Dr. Joe arrived with Mindy and the Chaos Twins.  (I swear that sounds like a band.)  The kids are much larger than they were (go figure) and incredibly cute.  Little kids are cute so that you don't strangle them, but this pair has cute in exponential amounts.

Jay and Kat arrived and soon we were in the blind draw tournament.  Poor Ron.  He was saddled with me at the apparent nadir of my bowling ability.  I embarassed myself and, since it was "competition," he offered no coaching tips, nor did I ask for any.  I just tried to be properly apologetic. Congrats to  Robuster and my lovely wife for winning.

Duty calls, so I must be off.  I'll write more later.

It was pure chaos, I tell you. Where did I come up with "Terror Twins"? Probably just the alliterative side of me.

Hey all, we finally made it back home, I know the Gathering has been over for a week but we took our time getting back to Florida.  We stopped in Stone Mountain, Georgia for a few days and hit a couple of other places along the way.

A big kudos go out to Ron, Karen, and all the staff for making the Gathering such a memorable experience, I really don't think you'll have a better time anywhere in the country doing an informal get-together as we have at Creekside Lanes.  Next year, Ron has promised the wife and I a much better map to find our way from Florida to the Gathering, it seems we've been kind of taking the long way around, lol. (You had to be there)

Kevin and his wife always seem to be the first ones there on Friday, one of these days we'll make it earlier than 5 o'clock and surprise them!  It was great to see some familiar faces and also some new ones, and my oh my, how the twins have grown in just one year, they did bowl well.

Friday afternoon was a blast with the blind draw doubles going on, I think we should do something like this next year too, it was a lot of fun.  Another possibility would be to throw in a 2 game set of low ball, I'm sure Jay will come up with something.  Like most of the guys here, my wife beat me in the TP tournament again, she finished 3rd and I was down the ladder a bit.

Anyone that is remotely thinking about coming next year should really try to make it, the center is great but the people are what really make the event a success.  You'll be sore from bowling a lot but definitely not hungry, we've eaten some really good grub, Ron and the crew know some good places.  We've already put the dates on the calender for next year so I hope more of you can make it, hopefully the economy will rebound somewhat and we can have a bigger turnout.
