State High school championship started
« on: September 17, 2004, 12:54:28 AM »
High school bowling was started around here in 2000. The proprietors agreed to provide the lanes, pay a coach, and buy uniforms for the schools. They have both a varsity junior varsity team and can earn a sport letter. The program has been a huge success so far with a lot of kids trying out for the teams.

I saw in the paper today that they have now agreed to start a state championship as well.

Apparently a couple of other metro areas have had their proprietors do the same thing and they now have enough schools participating to have a state championship.

An example of bowling proprietors trying to get youth bowlers involved and build a base for tomorrow.

Our center is very supportive.  Last year we had 2 high schools bowling out of our center.  This year we have 3.  It's hard for them to deal with 12 teams plus extras but it's working out.  Currently we are scheduled to have someone practicing 4 days a week and matches on Saturday.  Fundraising can be a bear.   Growth has been great compared to normal youth bowling.  We sent 3 of our 4 teams to state last year.  2 each boys and girls teams from the district of 6 went. 1 of our boys team won district and our 2 girls teams placed 1 and 2 in the district. At the state tournament there was close to 50 boys and 50 girls teams.  All our teams faired well but did not make the sweet 16.  One of my students did place 4th in singles.

I was very surprised by the state tournament and there was some great competition.  The Plano team shoots 278 in bakers and loses the match.
