In case you can't read it, the text over the pic says
quote:
Great sportsmanship displayed by Mr. Bennett. Mr. Watson's ball was destroyed in the 5th frame of the title match. The bowlers agreed to call it a draw and split $7000.
Now - that's good sportsmanship!!!
What would you have done if faced with the same thing?
-
Honesly, i wouldn't. If i bowled my arse off on what they said was a hard shot, winning or losing i'm not quitting with money on the line. Hats off to the guy that did, he's a better human than i am.
-
How did the ball get desroyed????
And good sport or not, it wasnt his fault that the other guys ball got destroyed.
And why didn't he grab another ball?

The guy I work for helps run these tournaments. Brian Bennet in addition to being one of the best bowlers in Delaware is definately a class act for that. Louis Watson was using a white dot(They apparenty used a variation of PBA Pattern C and they fried up pretty quick) and the belt that carries the ball up through the return somehow malfunctioned and was spinning the ball against something sharp and it got jammed. It took the staff about 20-30 minutes to hammer the ball out of the space it was stuck in and it was a mess. I think alot of people in the same situation would have done the same thing. Bennett was up in the match in the 5th frame therefore he was granted the decision on what to do. Maybe this lesson in sportsmanship will be a lesson to many people on this site.

Didn't know about the one ball rule. In that case he definitely did the right thing. Or at least the gentlemanly thing.

What a great amount of maturity and selflessness, for the one that made the decision. I could live with 3500.00 dollars, and the knowledge that I exemplified the selflessness that would have been pleasing to my Lord and King. Thanks for sharing that mumzie.

There was no requirement to use only one ball in the tournament. The real problem was a combination of the pattern, a variation of PBA Pattern C and a vey poor lane surface. The shot burned out very quickly and unless you used plastic, you were SOL. I've been at more than one tournament with both of these guys, so what they did didn't surprise me.

While I may not have split the prize money with him, I probably would have given him a portion of the money to buy a new ball.

Looking at the money they split I would have done the same thing. To me the guy who did that is a super classy gentleman! Kudos to him and anyone can look at him as a inspiration!

I was there during the stepladder finals (I finished 4th). I don't know what pattern was used (I dont' really care what the pattern is...my ball tells me what it is) but because of the horrible lane surface both Louis Watson and I used plastic all 19plus games. I was lofting the ball cap and standing in front of the gutter the last 5 games of the tournament.
When the ball got stuck, you knew something was wrong because you could hear a rapid clanking in the back. The mechanic brought the ball back about 10 minutes later and it had huge chunks taken out of it. I probably would not have split. It's not fair since that was the only ball Louis effectively could use...BUT had it been qualifying or matchplay he would have had to switch to something else.

I'd split the prize money and say Let's go gambling!

(with at least a little bit of the money)
